Tryon Daily Bulletin, Thurs.. May Home From Lima, Peru My hat is off to Colleen Taylor, of Peniel Road, Columbus, who recently returned from Lima, Peru where she was an AFS student. Colleen, a senior at Polk Central, attended a private Catholic school in Lima, took 14 courses (all in Spanish) and returned home in February with a diploma tucked under her arm. Colleen had studied Spanish for several years and earned excellent grades, however she discovered upon arriving in Lima that accent, dialects, slang expressions and rapidity of speech added a strangeness to the Spanish she had learned in the classroom. Colleen loves to learn new things and have new experiences, and had no qualms getting on an airplane for the first time which took her to Lima. Life was quite different for her in this big city as compared with Polk County. Cars were the exception, so on dates young people would go around in groups, usually walking in the neighborhood. Going out alone was unwise and girls would walk with their arms linked to avoid 1.1981 having their purses snatched Colleen's Peruvian family, the parents, two sisters and a brother, experienced new flavors when she cooked for them and introduced them to chocolate chip cookies, macaroni and cheese and pizza. Holiday customs were f un and meaningful. On Christmas Eve the family stayed up late, the house decorated but the little creche was empty At midnight the infant Babe was placed in the manger, a very symbolic gesture. The same theme is carried out on birthdays — the celebrant and the familystaying up late and then the golden minutes of 12:01 arrives and the birthday celebration begins. Colleen made many friends while in Peru, with whom she corresponds. Another AFS student lived only 3 blocks from Colleen and they became good friends. She and 4 other AFS students, with a chaperon, toured the Andes Mountains and visited the unforgettable ruins of Macchu Pichu. Colleen feels that the experience of being an AFS student has given her more self- reliance. maturity and a better understanding of people — the way they think and the way they feel. Peruvians respect Americans more than any other nationality and Colleen realized that as an American citizen in a foreign country she was being observed and thus must set a good example for her country. Colleen has had a very positive experience this past year and thinks anyone should try to be an AFS student if only for the reason to build up self-esteem and develop independence and maturity. — Reporter Read The Bulletin For Local Neus Calvin Klein JEANS Thurs., Fri., and Sat.
