No official weather report for
the weekend, but tne area had
several good showers.
N. C. Lt. Gov. Jimmy Greene is
under investigation for allegedly
accepting free or reduced-cost
paving from a Fayetteville
contractor involved in bidding on
state highway projects.
Loyal Bangladesh troops
threatened Sunday to attack the
army rebels who assassinated
President Ziaur Rahman if they
do not surrender.
In Beirut. Syrian forces and
rightist Christian militia battled
with field artillery, multiple
rocket launcers, mortars and
tank cannons across the dividing
line that bisects the Lebanese
capital into Christian and
Moslem sectors.
The Tryon High School
graduation will be Friday at 8
p.m. at the football field. In the
event of rain it will be held in the
Elementary School auditorium.
The Polk County Cloggers will
be featured on “Rascals Club
House" Saturday on Channel 4 at
9:30a.m.

Truck Found;
Gas Missing
Law officers are still looking
for the gunman who hijacked a
gasoline tanker May 22 on the
Saluda grade, but the truck has
been located. The truck was
found Thursday parked in the
parking lot of a motel in Icard, N.
C. The 8,850 gallons of regular
gasoline the tanker had been
carrying was missing.
As of Monday morning no
arrests had been made, but law
enforcement officers are still
investigating the hijacking.
A New Arrival
Mr and Mrs. Snell Sellars of
Tryon are parents of a son,
Benjamin Andrew, born May 28th
at St. Luke's Hospital.
Benjamin, who weighed 7 lbs. 11
oz. has a brother, Jonathan, who
is three years old.
The maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rutledge of
Tryon.
On Dean’s List
Mrs. Lynn M. Bradshaw of
Tryon was named to the Dean’s
List at Limestone College,
Gaffney, S. C. for the Spring
Semester.

The Tryon Middle School has
elected the following Student
Council Officers: President,

Meares. Mrs. Phyllis Rutledge is
the faculty sponsor.

DAR Picnic
The Joseph McDowell Chapter
of the National Society of the
Daughters of the American
Revolution will meet Friday,
June 5, at 12:00 noon at
"Pinebrook", Kanuga Road,
Hendersonville, the home of Mrs.
Ivor R. Pardee. Members are
requested to bring a covered dish
to the annual picnic.
Guests of honor will be the local
recipients of the DAR Good
Citizen Awards.
Polk County
Title I Reading
The District Advisory Council
for ESEA Title 1 reading in the
Polk County Schools met
Tuesday, May 26 at the Stearns
School Library. The parents
reviewed the project for 1981-82
and the evaluation results of this
year’s project. The recent Book
Fair was reported on and it was
decided to have another one next
year, for elementary as well as
high school students.
New officers were installed.
Mrs. Don Corn of Columbus is
Chairperson and Mrs. Bob
Wilson, also of Columbus, is
Secretary. Recognition was given
to five persons leaving the Title I
program. They are Mrs.
Margaret Rardin, Miss Margaret
Craig, Mrs. Marcia Pruitt, Mrs.
Jeanette Rickman and Mrs.
Diane Pace.
Special projects originating in
the Title I classrooms in the
schools this year have included
bookmaking, reading contests,
dramatic presentations, bake
sales, parent bookshelves, story
hours and field trips. Volunteers
have assisted with reading and
more are sought for next year.
Title I Director is Mrs. Helen
McBurney.
Meet Tonight
VFW Post 9116 and the Ladies
Auxiliary will meet Tuesday,
June 2nd at 7:30 p.m. in the
Columbus Town Hall.
