James Earl Ray, serving a 99 year prison term for assassinating Martin Luther King, Jr., was stabbed 22 times Thursday at Brushy Mountain Penitentiary in Tennessee. Four fellow inmates were held in the attack. The proposed Polk County Budget calls for a 13.7 cents tax rate increase; the Tryon City Schools is asking for a 3c increase and Harmon Field a >jc increase. A public hearing on the proposed 1981-82 county budget will be held Friday, June 12th in the Commissioner’s Conference Room. The Polk County School Board meets at 7:30 p m. tonight in the Extension Conference Room in the courthouse annex. The Tryon Town Council meets tonight at 7:30 p m in the Commissioners Room in the Tryon Town Hall. Late registration for the Spartanburg County Summer Recreation Program will be held today from 1 to 6 p.m. at 0. P. Earle School in Landrum. Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. tryouts for the Tryon Youth Summer Continued On Back Page Saluda Artists And Craftsmen To Hold Open House Members of the Saluda Association of Artists and Craftsmen will hold their Second Annual "Celebrate Saluda" Day on Saturday, June 20, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Seven Shops and Studios will be open, with eleven additional members of the Association exhibiting their work in the City Park Pavilion The shops and Studios include The Whistle Stop. Snaggy Hollow Crafts, Dukes Pottery, McCreery's Woodshop, David Yaghjian Artist; Saluda Mountain Crafts, Grandma's Attic and Saluda Mountain Toys and Wood Turnings. Those exhibiting in the Pavilion will include Mildred “T" Haywood. Ceramics; Cary Pace, Whittier; Max Kline. Wood Turning; Jack Morse, Woodworker, Nana Nelson, Decorative Painting, Gordon Johansen, Painter; Clara Sutherland. Sketching; and Eunice Skinner, Woodcarver. For the convenience of visitors, an Information Booth will be in the City Park. Brochures, with a map, will direct visitors to the various locations, indeniified by flags. A part of the day will include prizes, the work of the artists and craftsmen, to be given away at the end of the day. Continued On Back Page German Student In Tryon Christian Wadle The Rotary Club of Tryon, under its very active Youth Exchange Program, will be host to Christian Wadle, age 19, from Pirmasens, West Germany, from June 8 to July 6. Christian will be met at the airport by Sharon Marlowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Marlowe of Columbus. The next day, Sharon will depart for West Germany to be the guest of her pen-pal, Regine Gautsche, and of the Rotary Club of Pirmasens. Thus, she and Christian are continuing the one- for-one exchange of students between Pirmasens and Tryon during the last six years. Christian Wadle's father is a shoe manufacturer and manges the Westland Shoe Co. in Muenchweiler. Christian has a brother and two sisters. His interests include photography (he develops his own films), reading, especially history which may be the reason he likes classical as well as modern music. Driver Ed Starts Today The Tryon High School Driver Education began today at 7 a.m John Amen Named Editor John Amen, grandson of Mrs. W. E. Sassoon of Tryon, has been named editor of the literary magazine at Christ School, Arden "The Struan 1981" had this to say: "John Amen, from Tryon, has proven himself to be one of the most talented perceptive writers whose works have appeared in "Struan" John will be the editor of next year's magazine, and he promises to find some interesting ideas during his summer in England.” Kiwanis Tuesday The Tryon Kiwanis Club will meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m at the Pacolet River Plantation. Honored at the meeting will be Tryon Coach Mike Pearson, Tryon Key Club advisor Barry Flood, Polk Central Key Club advisor Eddie Roberts and Tryon Keywantte advisor Nina Morley. Col. S. L.
