No official weather report for
the weekend, but the humidty
was high. Monday morning was

The United Mine Workers
voted to end their 72-day strike
and went to work Monday.
President Reagan has decided
to seek a second term in office in
1984, White House Chief of Staff
James A. Baker III said Sunday.
Federal and local authorities
seized a plane carrying about 400
pounds of cocaine in New
Hanover County early Sunday
morning. Slate and Federal
officials say it is the largest
cocaine seizure ever in the state
and one of the largest in the
country. Arrested were Kevin
Joseph Power, 32 of
Massachusetts and Roger
Maurice Rivard, 31, of Maine.
Bojorn Borg of Sweden beat
Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia 6-1,
4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 Sunday to win the
French Open Tennis Title for the
6th time and the 4th in a row.
Pleasant Colony’s bid for the
Belmont Stakes and the Triple
Crown failed as Summing was
the upset winner.

Wreck
Thursday at 3:50 p.m. there
was a two vehicle accident on
Hwy. 108 2.8 miles northeast of
Columbus. The wreck involved a
'77 International delivery truck
and a ’78 Chevrolet station
wagon
The truck driven by James
Edgar Sowell of Charlotte going
toward Mill Spring tried to avoid
hitting a car pulling a trailer
which pulled out into the road in
front of it and skidded into the car
going west on Hwy. 108 by Mrs.
Marion Hughes McEntire of
Columbus. The driver of the car
pulling the trailer didn't stop.
There were no injuries, but
Mrs. McEntire's car was totaled
Little damage was done to the
truck according the Patrolman
David Satterfield who
investigated the accident.
Gets Diploma
John Bradshaw of Tryon
received his diploma Sunday,
May 31 from Deerfield Academy,
Deerfield. Mass, at the School’s
182nd Commencement
Exercises. He is the son of Mrs.
Laura C. Bradshaw of Tryon.
While at Deerfield, which
Bradshaw attended for three
years, he was president of the
architecture club a dormitory
proctor and a member of the
varsity track team. At
Commencement, he received an
award “for excellence in the
study of Fine Arts." He will
continue his studies at the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill in the fall.
UNC-C Graduates
Charlotte — Three Polk County
students received degrees during
commencement exercises for the
University of North Carolina at
Charlotte on May 16.
Dr. E. K. Fretwell, Jr.,
Chancellor of the University of
North Carolina at Charlotte was
commencement speaker as 1751
UNC-C students were awarded
graduate and undergraduate
degrees.
Polk County students earning
degrees are:
Deborah Karen Bishop, 189
Warrior Dr., Tryon, B.A. in
English.
Nancy P Kennedy, Rt. 2,
Columbus, a B.A. in psychology.
Patricia A. Payne, Rt 2,
Tryon, a B.A. in economics.

Tryon Lumber
An announcement has been
made that Tryon Lumber Co is
now an affiliate of Clement
Lumber Co., Inc. of Spartanburg.
S. C. Tryon Lumber Co. will
keep ■ its present name and
operate as a division of Clement.
Injured
Michael Hamrick, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Dean Hamrick of
Gowensville was injuried in a two
vehicle accident late Friday
afternoon on Hwy. 414.
Wayne Morgan, driver of the
other vehicle was also injured.
Both men are patients at
Greenville General Hospital
Move Here
Mr. and Mrs. William B.
Harbison of Indianapolis, Indiana
have moved here and are
occupying the Rogers guest
house near Morgan Chapel while
they are building a home on a 6
acre track on Hogback Mountain
Road which they purchased in
1979
Mr. Harbison retired as
secretary-treasurer of Haag
Drug Co. He is a graduate of
Purdue University where he was
a Sigma Chi. He enjoys geneology
and history.
Mrs. Harbison is the former
Pauline Judd She recently
retired from teaching business
courses in a junior college. She is
a graduate of Butler University
in Indianapolis where she also
received a masters in business
education. She enjoys
needlework, reading, and all
types of arts and crafts.
Mr. and Mrs. Harbison are
Episcopalians. They have two
children — a daughter, Andrea,
Mrs. Richard Mandel, of El Toro,
Calif, and a son, William Judd
Harbison of Chagrin Falls. Ohio.
They have five grandchildren.
They heard of Tryon from Bob
and Lee Mueller. Mr. Mueller
and Mr Harbison were fraternity
brothers at Purdue University.
