C. 28782 Fire Damages Lohse Home The Karl Lohse home on Glen Walden Circle, Tryon was heavily damaged by smoke and fire early Thursday morning. The Tryon Fire Department received the call at 1:48 and the firemen were going in the front door at 1:52. The fire was believed to have started on the second floor by an air conditioner and then came out the roof on the 3rd floor. The electrical fire created lots of smoke and the firemen had to use masks. Chief Clarence Scoggins said some of the firemen were on the second floor fighting the fire overhead and some were on the roof fighting the fire below them. Chief Scoggins said that 15 firemen responded to the call and he was proud of the way they performed. The firemen helped clean up the home to prevent water damage and checked back in at the fire station at 4:30 a.m. Won’t Meet The Polk County Board of Education plans NOT to meet at the regularly schedule meeting time on July 13th. However, if needs arise that require board action prior to the August meeting, there will be a called meeting of the board. The Music Makers of Tryon are playing at the Cleghorn Country Club for a dinner-dance Saturday night. Accepts Position As Rocky Mount Superintendent Dr. Larry D. Coble Dr. Larry D. Coble, Superintendent of the Polk County Schools has notified the Polk County School Board that he is accepting the position of Superintendent of the Rocky Mount City Schools effective August 1st. Dr. Coble, 33, stated Thursday morning that he did not seek another job, but that he was contacted by a Board member three weeks ago and asked to come for an interview. The new job meant a $12,000 plus pay increase for Dr. Coble as the Rocky Mount School System is the 13th best paying school system in the state. Polk County is tied for last place with 3 other counties who don’t have a local supplement. At 3:45 a.m. Tuesday Police Officer Michael Dukes arrested Tommy Glenn Campbell of Landrum and Geraldine Cole of Greer at the Tryon Plaza Motel and charged them with the possession of methampheta mines. They were placed in the Polk County jail. Officer Dukes was assisted by Polk County Deputy Mack Blanton. Wednesday night at 9:15 p.m. Officer Billy Stepp and Officer Nathan Shields noticed a car parked along the side of the Tryon Country Club Road. When they stopped to investigate, they saw an object being thrown out of the car. They arrested Karen Frances Wofford of Landrum and charged her with possession of amphetimines She was placed in the Polk County jail. Homecoming Sunday At Hickory Grove The Hickory Grove Baptist Church will have its Homecoming Sunday with dinner on the ground following the worship service. Singing will begin at 2 p.m. The Rev. John Edwards, pastor, said that all former members and friends were invited. A quick way to give barbecue fare a garlic flavor is to toss garlic cloves on the coals while meat grills.
