The Nuclear Regulatory Com
mission voted 3-0 in Washington
Monday to authorize a full power
license for the McGuire nuclear
plant near Charlotte, knocking
down the last regulatory barrier
to operating the JI.8 billion plant.
President Reagan Monday
pledged to "root out any case of
government discrimination
against minorities” but dodged
the key question of whether he
will favor extension of the Voting
Rights Act in its present form.
Dr. and Mrs. C. W. McCall, Jr.
and daughters, Kelly and Robin,
have returned to Tryon from a
two week trip to Great Britian. In
London they saw the Trooping of
the Colours and were standing
across the street when the blank
shots were fired at the Queen.
They also visited Wales and
drove through the English
country side.

Named Interim
Superintendent
Ronald B. Singletary
Ronald B. Singletary was
named as Interim Superinten
dent by the Polk County School
Board Monday night at a special
meeting. The action was taken
following a lengthy executive
session. /All members of the
Board voted for the motion
except Mrs. Phyllis Crain, who
stated that she thought that the
board should advertise for a
superintendent and hire one at
this time.
The intent of the Board is that
the interim superintendent serve
no longer than from .August 1,
1981 to June 30, 1982. The position
of superintendent will be
advertised in December 1981 and
applications will be received until
January 31, 1982. The screening
of the qualified applicants will be
completed and a superintendent

Summer Theatre
In Polk County
The Upstairs, Tryon’s artists’
space located at 117 S. Trade St.,
has announced the formation of a
summer theatre company, The
Upstairs Players. The Upstairs
Players will consist of three
graduates of the Wake Forest
University Theatre Department:
John Gulley of Winston-Salem,
Margaret Braswell of Wake
Forest, and Gary Hill of
Westbury, N. Y.
The Upstairs Players will
perform three pieces to run in
repertory during July and
August.
The first, "The Diary of Adam
and Eve", is a humorous, but
poignant, musical rendition of the
creation of Man and Woman.
"The Diary of Adam and Eve" is
based on a short story by Mark
Twain.
The second production will be
an evening of readings, song, and
mime based on the poetry of Walt
Whitman. The Upstairs Players
want to celebrate the average
person of the land who, in the
words of Whitman, at last only is
importamt."
The third production will be an
adaptation of William Shake
speare's “A Midsummer Night's
Dream" The Players want to
involve community members in
both acting and technical areas
for this ambitious mounting of
Shakespeare's magical, love and
laughter filled fantasy.

later date as to how interested
