retirement fund will go broke by
the end of next year and the
related Medicare program could
topple within the decade unless
taxes are raised or benefits
slashed, according to the three
cabinet officers who serve as
trustees of the system.
Everyone seemed to enjoy
themselves at the 4th of July
celebration in Columbus. An
occasional shower didn’t seem to
dampen the spirits at all.
A mob of youths stoned police
and looted shops Monday night in
Liverpool, England where
hundreds of people were injured
and more than 150 buildings
burned in a weekend of savage
riots described as the worst ever
in England.
"The News” published May 9th
in Portsmouth, England had a
picture of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley
Carr, a couple on holiday from
Florida, U.S.A, arriving at

Parkway Baptist Church in
Campobello is holding a revival
July Sth through July 20th at 7:30
each evening. Evangelist Don
Collins of Pilot Mountain, N. C.
will be the speaker Rev. Henry
Farmer is the pastor. The public
is invited.

Committee Meets
The Tryon Central Business
District Committee will meet
Monday, July 13th at 7 p.m. at the
Tryon Town Hall.
Tryon Rotarians
Meet Friday
The Tryon Rotary Club will
meet Friday at 12:30 p.m. at
Pacolet River Plantation.
A musical program will be
presented by students from the
Brevard Music Center. The
Brevard Music Center is in its
45th season, opening this year’s
festival on Independence Day
weekend with opera, concerts
and cannons. The second festival
weekend features Pirates of
Penzance, an operetta on Friday
night; the Transylvania
Symphony with Robert
McDonald, pianist Saturday
night and the BMC Orchestra
with Charles Rex, vioinist and
Christopher Rex, cellist on
Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
Performances from the Brevard
Music Center have been an
annual event at the Tryon Rotary
Club for several years
Joins Landrum
Medical Center
Dr. Paul II. Gulley
Paul H. Gulley, M.D. became
associated with Landrum
Medical Center on July 6th in the
practice of family and internal
medicine.
A North Carolina native, Dr.
Gulley is a 1974 graduate of Wake
Forest University and a 1977
graduate of Bowman Gray School
of Medicine. After receiving the
M.D. degree, Dr. Gulley
continued his training in a three
year residency program in
Internal Medicine at the
Allentown Affiliated Hospitals in
Allentown, Pennsylvania, and
completed the program in June,
1981.
Dr. Gulley, his wife Ruth, and
daughter, Sarah will reside in
Five Oaks in Landrum.
Mrs. Peter Mahler has
returned to Delray Beach, Fla.
after a visit at Chinquapin
Farms.
