Mayor Ted Owens of Columbus
has asked that all Columbus
water users refrain from
watering their garden, lawn or
washing cars. Mayor Owens said
that the extremely hot and dry
weather has cut the Columbus
water supply in half. He urged
that everyone cooperate in the
effort to conserve water.
North Carolina joined eight
other Southern states Tuesday in
a quarantine of California fruit
and vegetables to avoid possible
crop infestation by
Mediterranean fruit flies. The
quarantine won’t necessarily
stop the produce from entering
the state, but it will subject the
produce to scrutiny and possible
rejection.
Max Hugel, a millionaire

Marijuana Bust
Three persons were arrested on
drug charges Tuesday at the end
of a two-month investigation by
the Asheville Police Department,
Buncombe County Sheriff’s
Department, Forest City Police,
and State Bureau of Investigation
agents. Consficated and
estimated to be worth $192,600
was 301 pounds of marijuana.
Jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond
each were Gregory Orvili
Bertelsen, 34, of Tryon; Donald
Lee Martin, 44, of Morristown,
Tenn.; and Michael Paul
Mashburg, 29, of Henrietta. —

The Sth annual Tri-County
Softball League Firecracker
Tournament was held July 10, 11
and 12 at Harmon Field. There
were a total of 54 games played.
The Men’s Division was won by
Budweiser of Spartanburg and
the Women’s Title was taken by

Following Budweiser in the

special report on Annexation for
WLOS-TV. He went to Columbus,
Ga. to study how the
consolidation of Columbus and
the County Government had
worked out. Asheville and
Buncombe County are
considering consolidation at this
time.
Green Creek
Is Eliminated
Green Creek was eliminated
from the Area I Double
Elimination Tournament
Tuesday when they dropped a 14-
4 decision to Harris-Shiloh. The
Green Creek field became a
hitter's paradise as Harris-Shiloh
hit five home runs. One of the
homers hit by Shannon Spencer
went over the Little Field
centerfield fence and then
cleared the softball fence behind
Tammy Thompson was the big
gun for Green Creek as she had a
home run in the fifth inning and
