The air traffic controllers and
the government stood “miles
apart” in contract talks as the air
traffic controllers went on strike
Monday morning. Attorney
General William French Smith,
saying a controllers strike
“would be a crime," promised to
prosecute strikers "to the full
extent provided by law", seeking
both civil and criminal penalities.
A strike is in violation of a long
standing federal injunction as
well as a law prohibiting strikes
by government employees.
Bob Gibson, Johnny Mize and
Rube Foster were officially
inducted into baseball Hall of
Fame Sunday.
The open singles tennis
tournament was rained out last
weekend at Harmon Field. This
weekend it's the doubles and on
the 15th and 16th the singles will

22 Arrested;
12 Cars Confiscated;
In Drug Raids
Friday law enforcement
officers arrested 22 persons in
Polk Rutherford and
Spartanburg counties on drug
related charges. Sheriff Boyce
Carswell stated Monday morning
that one more arrest was
expected. A total of 12 vehicles
were seized in the three county
operation. Sheriff Carswell
stated that several arrests had
been made in Rutherford County
and Spartanburg County. This
was Phase II of three phases the
Sheriff’s Department is planning.
The investigation covered about 3
months of undercover drug buys.
The raids began Friday at 7 a.m.
and authorities confiscated
quantiles of marijuana, cocaine
and methaqualone as well as the
12 vehicles.
The following persons were
arrested in Polk County:
Randal S. McClure, 25, of
Landrum who was charged with
selling and having in possession
methaqualone and cocaine. He
made bond.
Michael Lee Johnson, 27, of
Mill Spring, who was charged
with selling and delivering
marijuana He made bond.
Scott Arthur Ruff, 20, of Mill
Spring, who was charged with
selling marijuana and
methaqualone.
Gary Bolt, 18, of Green Creek,
who was charged with selling
and delivering marijuana.

Winston-Salem Wins
State Title
The Winston-Salem League
baseball team defeated Roanoke
Rapids 5 to 3 Friday evening at
Harmon Field to win the state
title They will be the host team in
the Division Tournament which
opens today in Winston-Salem.
Revival
Revival services will be held at
Mt. View Baptist Church on Lake
Adger Road beginning August
9th. Services will be held each
evening at 7:30 pm. with the
Rev. Charles Arledge the visiting
evangelist. Rev. Robert Bates is
the pastor.
