began firing striking air traffic
controllers Wednesday and
declared itself determined to run
the fightpaths without them even
though the flying public will have
"no cakewalk" for the next year
or two.
District 1 schools will open
Aug. 26 for a full school day In

School. District I students in
grades one through eight in the
1980-81 school year scored above
the national average in basic
skills of reading, English and

Lieutenant Governor Jimmy
Green today announced the re-
appointment of Sen. J J. (Monk)
Harrington of Lewiston and Sen.
R. P. (Bo) Thomas of
Hendersonville to two-year terms
on the Environmental
Management Commission of the
Department of Natural
Resources and Community
Development. The Lieutenant
Governor originally appointed
them both in 1980 when the
Commission was expanded by the
General Assembly. The
Commission has the
responsibility of promulgating
rules and regulations to be
followed in the protection,
preservation, and enhancement
of water and air resources in
North Carolina.

Interested In A
Saturday Semiar?
The School of Humanities and
Social Sciences at North Carolina
State University is sponsoring
seminars on nine different
subjects this fall. Co-sponsors are
the North Carolina Agricultural
Extension Service and the
National Endowment for the
Humanities. The seminars meet
for approximately two hours
each week for four weeks. The
first and fourth sessions are to be
conducted by a professor from
the School of Humanities. The
middle two weeks will be
conducted by a local member of
the group with videotapes from
NCSU.
Topics offered are: North
Carolina and the Civil War;
North Carolina Folklore; The
Portrayal of the Small Town in
American Literature; Violence
and Capital Punishment; The
United States and Russia Today;
Religion, Obscenity, Dissent;
First Amendment Issues.

attending a Saturday Seminar in
Columbus, call the Agricultural

Time, place and topic will be
determined by those interested.
Upstairs Change
The Upstairs Players will not
perform "The Mid-Summer
s “ ream ” Knight in
Saluda. That performance has
been rescheduled for Tuesdav
Aug. 18th at 7 p.m.
