The City of Saluda had a very
successful 100th birthday
celebration Saturday and
Sunday. Everyone seemed to
have a good time and lots of
people renewed friendships.
The Polk County Jaycee and
Tryon Kiwanis Open Doubles
Tennis Tournament was held at
Harmon Field Saturday and
Sunday and spectators present
saw some excellent tennis.
The Tri-County Softball league
tournament was being played on
the two softball fields at Harmon
Field.
The Curb Reporter attended
the reunion of the Tryon High
School Class of 1941 Saturday at
Caro-Mi and enjoyed seeing
former classmates.
The Reagan administration has
announced that it will build
neutron warheads "Inhuman,”
“barbaric” and "cannibalistic”
were words used by the official

House Destroyed
By Fire Sunday
The home of Mr. and Mrs.
Charlie Campbell of Oak Grove
was destroyed by fire early
Sunday morning. The Landrum
Fire Department responded to
the fire at 3:45 a.m. No one was
home at the time.

First Day Of School
Polk Central's school pictures
will be made the first day of
school. Thursday. Aug. 20th.
Also, senior make-up pictures
will be taken at 8:30
All students are asked to come
dressed appropriately.
Lake Lure Lions
The Board of Directors of the
Laker Lure Lions will meet
Wednesday, August 12th at 11:30
a m. in The Duck Cedar Inn.
The membership meeting will
be Thursday, August 13th at 7:30
p m. in the Lake Lure Golf
Course clubhouse.

Open Tennis
Doubles Tourney
The Polk County Jaycees and
Tryon Kiwanis Open Doubles
Tennis Tournament was held last
weekend at Harmon Field Bryan
Corpening and David Vining
retained their men’s doubles title
with a three set win over Lee
Haslam and Mark Boyles. The
scores were 6-2,3-6,6-2.
The Women's Doubles
championship was won by Joan
Lonnes and Annette Stafford.
They defeated Lila Corpening
and Kay Price 6-4,6-1.
The Mixed Doubles title went to
Annette Stafford and David
Vining who defeated Lila
Corpening and Mark Boyles in
three sets, 6-4,3-6,6-3.

Polk 4-H’ers Excell
In Dairy Show
The Asheville Citizen reported
the winners in the Western North
Carolina dairy competition and
the Polk County 4-H’ers and their
cattle took a large portion of the
ribbons.
Guernsey — junior champion,
Windy Wolf of Columbus; senior
and grand champion, Sarah
Davis of Mill Spring.
Jersey — junior champion,
Linney Barber of Columbus
Fitting and Showing Finals:
Guernsey, Sarah Davis, first;
Windy Wolf, second; Jersey —
Robbie Barber, Columbus, third.
Junior champion in fitting and
showing for all breeds was won
by Wendy Wolfe.
Polk County won the County
Herdsmanship Trophy.
Terry Wolf of Polk, dressed
as a cookie monster, won the calf
dressing contest.
