Legal! Legal! Legal! The Polk County Department of Social Services Board has received a letter from the State of North Carolina Attorney General's Office that the employment of William A. McFarland as attorney for the Social Services board was legal and that his services should be viewed as valid and binding. Commissioner Opal Sauve had claimed that Mr. McFarland had served illegally. Henry H. Burgwyn, Assistant Attorney General stated in his letter that as the law is now interpreted, if the board of county commissioners assert their statutory and contractural duties (rather than designate them) the County Commissioners have the power to appoint the attorney and the Board of Social Sendees has the right to give their approval.
