indicted for attempted
assassination Monday, Hinckley,
26, wrote in an unmailed letter to
actress Jodie Foster that he
wanted to "get Reagan” to prove
his love for her.
The U S. Senate ethics
committee voted unanimously
Monday to recommend expulsion
of Sen. Harrison A Williams. Jr.
for “ethically repugnant"
conduct in the Abscam case. If
carried out, it would be the first
expulsion from the Senate since
the Civil War.
Former President Jimmy
Carter received a warm
reception Monday on his first trip
to China.
A new law in South Carolina
requires the driver of any vehicle
with one-way transparent glass
installed in the windshield or
front winaows to roll down the
front windows when approached
by a highway patrolman or any
commissioned law enforcement
officer.

entered Livingstone College in

freshman. He graduated from

Miss Tamara Goodwin,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Goodwin of Tryon is a contestant
in the North Carolina Apple
Festival Beauty Pageant to be
held Thursday at 7:30 p m. at the
Hendersonville High School
Auditorium
Annual Cancer
Dinner Oct. 1
The American Cancer Society’s
annual dinner meeting will be
held at the Garrison Chapel
Baptist Church in Tryon on
Thursday. Oct. 1st. Dinner will
be prepared and served by
members of the Church, starting
al6:30p.m.
In support of the Cancer
Society’s fund raising efforts,
there will be a table of baked
goods for sale.
Lake Lure Lions
The Lake Lure Lions Club will
hold its annual Barbecue and
Picnic meeting Thursday at 6:30
p.m. at Picnic Point on Lake
Lure. This will be ladies night
Royal Fowler, III has returned
to Philadelphia, Pa. after visiting
his mother at Foxden Farm
Royal is a fourth year student at
Philadelphia College of Textiles
and Science where he is studying
Finance.
It’s Dr. Brooks
On Sunday, Aug 23, Dr. George
Boutieller, member of the Board
of Directors represented Dr. R.
A Shockney, President of
Crossroads Bible College and
Crossroads School of Divinity, in
conferring upon Rev, David W
Brooks, the Doctor of Divinity
degree. In making the
presentation, Dr. Boutieller said:
"This is given to men who have
accomplished things for God
outside the classroom in
recognition for work done outside
the school or academics. This is
the highest recognized award or
honor that can be given to men of
God.” Dr. Brooks is pastor of
Grace Baptist Church, Landrum,
S. C., married to the former
Brenda Allen, has two daughters.
Shelley and Susan.
Miss Beth Bell, daughter of
Mrs Rachel Bell of Mill Spring
has entered Appalachian State
University at Boone where she is
a freshman.
Bird Program
For Tryon Rotary
Martha and Ken Fredericks of
Howard Gap Road. Tryon will
present a program on birds at the
Tryon Rotary Club meeting at the
Pacolet River Plantation, 12:30
p.m. Friday, featuring the use of
color slides accompanied by
recorded songs and calls.
Mrs. Fredericks is chairman of
the Tryon Bird and Nature Club's
Committee on Bird Study and
Field Trips. She was a student of
graduate courses at the Cornell
University Dept, of Ornithology
and has joined with ornithologists
and naturalists in the study of
birds in many climates of the
United States, Canada and
Mexico.
Mr. Fredericks retired from
Western Electric as an engineer
and is presently in charge of
sound at Tryon Little Theater,
using slides and recordings
furnished through the Cornell
Laboratory of Ornithology, Mr
Fredericks has skillfully
transferred the songs and calls of
the birds from disc records to
cassette tape. This greatly
facilititates presentation

returned to UNC at Charlotte.
Miss Carole Wilson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wilson of
Tryon has entered Western
Carolina University at Cullowhee
for her freshman year.
