A powerful explosion ripped
through the prime ministry in
Tehran. Iran Sunday injuring
Iran's president and prime
minister. A report from a British
correspondent in Tehran said
both men died of their wounds.
Those of us who grew up in the
radio era lost a friend when
Lowell Thomas died. He had a
style ail of his own and covered
adventure as well as news. He
wrote a number of books, but
probably “With Lawrence in
Arabia” brought him the most
fame. He was 89.
Landrum High School has two
outstanding performers on the
Western Carolina Universitv
football team this fall. Nathan
Williams, a 6-0, 225 lb. offensive
tackle is a transfer from Lees-
McRae Junior College where he
won All-American honors. He is
having a good fall and is expected
to see lots of action. Eric
McCarty is a 6-4, 220 lb. sopho
more who plays defensive tackle.

Hospital Employees
To Receive 8%
Wage Increase
Employees of St. Luke's
Hospital will receive an 8% cost
of living increase, according to
the 1981-82 budget. Patient
charges will have to be
increased, after approve by Blue
Cross-Blue Shield.
To Enter Bates
Jenna P. Buckner, daughter of
Tegwen Y. Buckner of Tryon, will
enter Maine's Bates College as a
freshman in Septmeber.
A graduate of Tryon High
School, Buckner was a member
of the Beta Club, Keywanettes,
school newspaper, yearbook
staff. Student Council, Pep Club,
Glee Club, Monogram Club and
Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
She was also active as a
cheerleader and in track..
Benefit Dance For
Lake Lure Lions
On Friday, September 4th The
Lake Lure Lion Club will sponsor
a benefit dance at the Lake Lure
Community Building Dance area
for the Blind and prevention of
blindness. The dance will start at
8 p.m. Music will be provided by
the “Pick” Biggerstaff Band.
Please bring any old eye glasses,
frames, or lenses you desire to

New Visiting Hours
For St. Luke’s
Beginning September 1st, St.
Luke’s is allowing visitors from
10a.m. to8:30 p.m. except for the
obstetrical section and intensive
care units. Hospital officials hope
that there will be a voluntary
limiting of visitors in a room.
Patients who don’t want visitors,
or can’t have them, will have a
sign on the door, and the
prohibition will be enforced.
New Doctor
Coming Nov. 1
Dr. James Salerno, who is
currently practicing in
Meadville, Pa. will begin
practive Nov. 1st, delivering
babies and working in
gynecology.
St. Luke’s Hospital will
complete the one unfinished
doctor’s office near the hospital
and has invited him to use it rent
free for the first year.
Additionally St. Luke's will
guarantee Dr. Salerno a first
year annual practice income of
$90,000 from which he will pay all
office expenses. Office expenses
run about half of a practicing
physician’s practice income. The
hospital subsidy will not be
necessary should Dr. Salerno’s
practice grow unexpectedly fast.
Miss Debbie Carol Miller,
daughter of Mrs. Ethel Miller of
Livinston St., Tryon will enter
Isothermal Community College
in Spindale for her freshman
year.
