C. 28782 Tryon Tigers Beat NCSD 31-19 It seemed like old times as the Tryon Tigers defeated the North Carolina School for the Deaf Bears 31-19 at Morganton. After going 0-9 last year and losing their opener this year, it was a sweet victory for the Tigers. After a scoreless first quarter, the Bears struck in the second period and went ahead 7 to 0. The Tigers took over in the second half, scoring 31 points, 16 in the third quarter and 15 in the final period. Todd Constance scored two touchdowns and ran two 2-point conversions; Corkey Wilkins ran for one TD and 1 2-point conversion; Jimmy Clement ran for a score and Kevin McCool kicked the extra point following the final TD. Coach Elmo Neal said that he had a good team effort. He said that Tommy Hill had an excellent second half on defense. Other linemen performing well were Joey Henson, Kevin McCool, Scott Braddock and Fred Jaeger. Coach Neal said that Todd Constance ran exceptionally hard and one of his scores came on a 34 yard run. Corky Wilkins ran for a 19 yard TD and looked exceptionally good for a freshman. Jimmy Clement was another back who ran hard for the Tigers. Austin Neal, a freshman who came off the bench, also ran hard. This Friday the Tigers travel to Cherokee for a 7:30 game. Mr. Fincher, who moved to Tryon in 1966 is a native fo Union, S. C. He is a graduate of the University of South Craolina receiving a B. S. Degree in Pharmacy, he is married to the former Ann Washburn of Shelby and they have three married children and two grandsons. He has been active on church and civic work. He has served as chairman of the Polk County Social Services Board, President of the Tryon Lions Club, President of the Tryon Chamber of Commerce, member of the Tryon Celtral Business District Committee and as chairman of the Tryon First Baptist Church Board of Deacons.
