another beautiful day.
The Senate, ending an all-male
tradition nearly two centuries
old, unanimously confirmed
Sandra Day O’Connor as an
associate justice of the Supreme
Court on Monday. Mrs. O'Connor,
a 51-year-old Arizona state
appeals judge, will be sworn in
Friday.
About 50 persons were allowed
to return home late Monday after
being evacuated from theii
homes when a tanker truck
carrying 6,500 gallons
of toxic and highly
flammable substance wrecked
Monday afternoon off N. C. 108
six miles west of Rutherfordton.
About 1,500 gallons of styrene, a
liquid used in making plastics,
was spilled, causing the
evacuation of homes in a three-
quarter mile radius of the wreck.
Workers left the scene about 11
p.m. Monday after transferring

Schools Get
More Money
At the 21 Polk County
Commissioners meeting, Phyllis
Crain, of the Polk County Schools
Board, gave a presentation of the
areas cut which to her are
essential. These cuts included
building repair and maintenance,
janitorial supplies, testing
program, band and library
supplies, substitute services, and
elementary music supplies She
estimated these would cost
$22,000. Commissioner Sauve
reported that the county received
more in intangible taxes than
expected, and moved to allot
$21,000 for current expenses, to
be pro rated between Polk County
and Tryon schools. This will be
$15,927.45 for Polk Schools
and $5,072.55 for Tryon Schools.
This passed unanimously
Pat Dunton, chairman of the
Appearance Commission, and
several committee members
discussed problems the
commission has encountered.
Some of these are lack of funds
needed to accomplish what needs
to be done, litter removal is low
on the list of priorities, and all
suggestions, except Clean-Up
Week, have come up against a
stone wall. It was recommended
that awareness be taught in state
wide civic classes. Since there
was no citizen support, it was
recommended that the
commission be abolished. Ted
Owens, of the Economic
Development Commission,
