Update On
Columbus Water
Harold Martin, Columbus
Councilman, said Wednesday
morning that the Columbus water
is safe and should be clear of all
smell and taste.
Mr Martin said that last
Wednesday, Sept. 16th, Eagle
Construction Co. of Newberry
was paving a road on White oak
Mountain when a hose broke on a
paving truck and 100 gallons of
asphalt primer entered Horse
Creek about 250 yards above the
Columbus water intake. Users of
the Columbus water began
complaining about the smell of
the water and upon investigation
the town found the trouble and
cut off the intake on the water
system at 5 p m. Thursday.
Wade Knox, N. C. Department
of Natural Research and
Community Development was
notified and invited by the Town
to survey the spill. The Town
stopped the paving co. Friday
morning so the clean-up could
proceed. James R. Reid
Environmental Chemistry
Consultant with the Division of
Environmental Management
with the N. C. Department of
Natural Resources and
Community Development came
in Friday morning to direct the
clean-up. He had the construction
crew set up a straw barrier at the
dam above the intake and change
it daily until everything was
totally cleaned up.
The town resumed taking
water at 6:30 p.m. Friday, but
