Postal Service, overrulling the independent Postal Rate Commission for the first lime, announced Wednesday it will raise rates for a first-class letter by 2 cents to 20 cents. The new rate will take effect Nov. 1st. The Postal Service also raised rates of post cards from 12 cents to 13 cents and imposes rate hikes throughout most of the postal schedule. The new rate was immediately challenged in the courts by the National Association of Greeting Card Publishers whose members will be hit especially hard because the increase comes just before the Christmas mailing season. If federal income taxes are withheld from your paycheck, you can expect a modest increase in take-home pay, thanks to the first installment of President Reagan’s three year 25% tax reduction for individuals. Most of us won't be able to tell much difference until the next step becomes effective. John Parris in the Asheville Citizen reports that the headwaters of Pigeon River and Davidson River are drying up. Singing will be Oct. 4th al3 p.m. Mr. Meadows is a graduate of Freed-Hardeman College in 1955. He has just recently ended a fruitful service with the Central Church in Spartanburg. He also served churches in Midleton, Tenn.; Weir, Kentucky and East Chester Church of Christ in Jackson, Tenn. Football Tonight Tonight Tryon travels to Landrum and Polk Central celebrates its homecoming against North Carolina School for the Deaf. Tryon at Landrum The Tryon Tigers travel to Landrum tonight for one of the area's big games. Tryon is 1 and 3 and has had a hard time moving the ball on offense. Landrum is 2- 2 and is coming off a big win against Blue Ridge last Friday. Tryon usually plays well against Landrum, but this year the Cardinals have too much. N.C.S.D. at Polk Central The Polk Central Patriots are 0-4, but are looking for their first win against the North Carolina School for the Deaf Bears. This is Homecoming and the Queen will be crowned during halftime ceremonies. The Patriots should get their first win of the season. Tryon Band Boosters Meet Monday The Tryon Band Boosters will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the band room. The paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Willie Burnett of Mill Spring and the paternal great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Burnett of Rutherfordton. The maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Jackson of Mill Spring and the maternal great grandmother is Mrs Earl Melton of White Oak Terrace.
