Monday morning was cool and
cloudy. It tried to rain Friday,
but wasn’t successful. Many
small streams are just a trickle
and lakes and ponds are low.
Although the General
Assembly officially granted state
employees and teachers a 5
percent pay increase, most will
receive a larger raise, due tc
various bonuses written into their
contracts.
A helium balloon bearing the
name of Super Chicken III
breezed across the United States
and landed off the Georgia coast
on Sunday in the first non-stop
balloon flight from one end of the
country to the other. They were in
the air 55 hours, 25 minutes and
they traveled 2,515 miles.
We don’t think that the leaves
are as pretty as usual this year,
but there are still some beautiful

Tryon High
Nominations For
Morehead Award
Vernon L. Dusenbury,
Superintendent of Tryon City
Schools, has announced that
Tryon High School has nominated
four candidates for the John
Motley Morehead Awards at the
University of North Carolina.
Chosen to represent Tryon High
School in this annual competition
are Tim Ross, Miss Martha Dye,
Miss Karen Rindge, and Miss
Sherrie Miller.
Tim Ross, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. William Ross, is a senior at
Tryon High School. During his
four years, Tim has
demonstrated his capabilities as
a student, been an active
member of the school
community, and has participated
in varsity athletics.
Martha Dye, the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. C harles Minter, is
also a senior at Tryon High
School. Martha has compiled an
excellent academic record and
has participated in a variety of
school and community activities.
Martha has also been involved in
competitive athletics as a
participant in both tennis and
track.
Karen Rindge, the daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Fred H. Rindge"s a
senior at Tryon High School.
Karen is an accomplished
student and has been most active

Under Secretary
Of The Army
James R. Ambrose
James R. Ambrose was
nominated by President Reagan
to be Under Secretary of the
Army on September 30, 1981, was
confirmed by the United States
Senate on October 7, 1981. As one
of the Army's top civilians, he
will assist in formulating overall
Army policy, procedures and
programs.
Mr. Ambrose was born in
Brewer, Maine, on August 16,
1922. He was educated through
high school in Bangor, and
graduated with high distinction
and departmental honors from
the University of Maine in 1943
with a degree in engineering
physics. Later he attended
Georgetown University, Catholic
University, and the University of
Maryland where he acquired a
substantial part of his post

Mr. and Mrs. William Jednak
of Columbus, are parents of a
daughter, Jamie Jean, born on
Sept. 24th at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Maternal grandmother is Mrs.
Lois Wynn of Columbus, Ohio.
Paternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Eddy Jednak of
Columbus, Ohio. The paternal
great-grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Clark of Columbus,
Ohio and Mrs. Mary Jednak of
Kensington, Ohio.
Jamie has an older sister,
. Jaclyn who is 4 years old.
A New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Jones,
Jr. of Raleigh, N. C. are the
parents of a son, Eugene
Michael, born Sunday, October
11 in Rex Hospital, Raleigh. He
weighed 8'^ lbs.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene M. Jones, Sr., of Tryon
and Mrs. Mildred Westmoreland
of Taylors, S. C.
Polk Central PTA
Meets Monday
The Polk Central PTA will
meet Monday at 7:30 p.m at the
high school gym. There wil be a
guided tour of the school and
refreshments will be served.
The Music Makers played
Saturday at the armory in
Clinton, S. C. for the Clinton
Cotillion Club.
