Monday, but it was a nice day.
Tuesday was sunny and nippy
early in the morning.
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat
the Montreal Expos 2-1 Monday
to win the National League. Now
it is the New York Yankees and
the Los Angeles Dodgers in the
World Series.
The government imposed new
flight restrictions on private
aircraft Monday to ease the
burden on non-union air traffic
controllers, prompting outcries
from business and individual
fliers. The new FFA rules
generally put the same
restrictions on small private
planes and corporate aircraft
that use the air traffic control
system as has been imposed on
the regularly scheduled air
carriers.
Public Service Co. of N. C.,
Inc., has requested an overall 6.4
percent increase in natural gas

Is Saturday
The Punt, Pass & Kick
Competition will be held
Saturday at 10 a.m. at Harmon
Field. It is open to boys and girls
from the ages of 8 — 13 by Dec.
31st. If you are 8 by Dec. 1st your
are eligible and if you will be 14
by Dec. 31st you are too old. The
event is sponsored by the Polk
County Jaycees.
Short Meeting
For Commissioners
The Polk County
Commissioners had a short
meeting on 19 October, 1981. Earl
Barnette explained the zoning
request for Fairlane Estates on
Hwy. 108, in preparation for the
public hearing on Monday, 9
November, at 7:00 p.m. in the
courthouse.
There was only one bid for an
office microfilm printer. It was
from Eastman Kodak for $13,215
plus tax of $528.60. It was decided
to accept it on condition that
County Manager investigate it
more fully.
The Commissioners reported
on their tour of St. Luke’s
Hospital, which was very
impressive. Hospital director
Swicegood wants as many grouos
as would like to take the tour
The next commissioner
meeting will be held in the
Agriculture Extension Room at

Woman Of The Day
Mable R. Cowan
Named as Women of the Day
during the week of Oct. 18 — 24 by
the Thermal Belt BPW was
Mable R. Cowan.
She is a graduate of Tryon High
School and Western Carolina
University. She is English
teacher and librarian at Tryon
High School.
She is a member of the Tryon
United Methodist Church and its
choir as well as the Pastor-
Parrish Relations Committee.
Mrs. Cowan has been sponsor of
the Beta Club at Tryon High
School for 12 years and was
sponsor for the Methodist Youth
Fellowship for 7 years. She has
served as vice president and as
treasurer of the NCAE.
She is married to Charles
Cowan, owner of Polk Insurance
Co. and they have one son, John,
a senior at Wofford College.
Farm Bureau
Meets Nov. 2nd
The annual meeting of the Polk
County Farm Bureau
membership will be held
Monday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the
Polk Central High School
Cafeteria. The meeting will
consist of a covered dish supper

followed by a brief business
meeting, entertainment and door
prizes.
A New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Poore,
Jr. of Landrum are parents of a
son, Brannon Ray-Charles, born
October 18th at St. Luke’s
Hospital.
Maternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Ray McClure of
Landrum and the paternal
grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Charles E. Poore of Gramling.
Weavers To Meet
The Western North Carolina
Fibers/Handweavers Guild will
meet Saturday at 10 a.m. in the
library at Weaverville where
they have an exhibit.
Ruth Mondquist Myers of
Downers Grove, ID. is conducting
a 3-day seminar on Scandinavian
Art Weaves at Opportunity House
in Hendersonville Oct. 21 — 23.
