A report by the N. C. State
Auditor’s office contends that the
Division of Employment and
training is overstaffed, poorly
supervised and lacks adequate
internal communication. The
agency, which is responsible for
job training, already is under
attack for alleged mishandling
of federal funds.

trillion mark Thursday.
The Washington Post on
Thursday apologized to former
President Jimmy Carter and
retracted its Oct. 5 report about
rumors that Carter bugged Blair
House while President and Mrs.
Reagan were living there prior to
Reagan’s inauguration. The let
ter was printed in full in Friday s
editions of the Post, accompanied
by a front-page news story The
Carters were going to sue if the
paper did not apologize.
Authorities investigating a
bloody Brink’s robbery revealed
new links Thursday between
black and white outlaw radicals.

Opens Today
The Columbus Farm Supply,
now known as Columbus Farm &
Garden Center, operated by Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Abrams and
Mr and Mrs. Doug Roach,
opened today in a new location.
The Columbus Farm and
Garden Center has a new
building at the corner of Blanton
and Ward Streets in Columbus,
just one block from the old
location.
Mr. Roach said that customers
will enjoy a bright new sales
area, easy loading from a new
warehouse dock, plenty of off-
street parking, easy access from
Highway 108, and a wide variety
of farm, home and garden
supplies.
A New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Acus of
Tryon are parents of a son
Donald Edward Acus, Jr, born
October 22nd at Rutherford
Hospital. He has a sister, Renee
age 9.
The maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schuck
of Campobello. The paternal
grandparents are Mr. and Mrs
Edward Acus of Grove Oak Ala

Student Of Week
Penny Voso
Tryon Beta Student of the week
is Penelope (Penny) Voso. Penny
is the 13 year old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Philip Voso. She has an
older brother, Andy, who is 15
years old.
Penny is in Mrs. Fortanbary’s
homeroom and is president of her
class. Being her class’ president
also makes her a member of the
student council.
Penny is in Miss Turner’s
Special Education class and
maintains an A average in her
school work. She is a member of
the Tryon Senior Band. She is
going to play 7th and Sth grade
basketball this year also.
Penny is very helpful to both
her teachers and schoolmates.
She is a well-liked and well-
known student around school. —

Halloween Carnival
The Saluda School PTO
Halloween Carnival will be
Friday, Oct. 30th from G:30 to 9
p.m. at the school. Money raised
will be spent on athletic supplies.
There will be a costume contest,
king and queen contest and
various, games. A spaghetti
supper will beheld in the
cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m.
Proceeds will go to various
needed items at the school.
Annual Bazaar

Extension Homemakers have
been busy using their talent and
skill to make items for their
annual bazaar to be held October
29.
According to an ad baked
goods, crafts, Christmas tree
ornaments, home decorating
items will be available. The
bazaar will be held from 10 a.m.
to 4 p m. at the Columbus Fire

ornaments made by the Carolina
Club' pound cakes and other
baked products from Peniel
Club handmade felt ornaments
made by the Columbus Club.
Suburban club will be your
guide at the white elephant table
where you may find treasures for

The monies are used by the
council and clubs to help with
Broughton Hospital Project for
patients and for club sponsored
community projects.
