Polk County 4-H Dairy Club members competed in the Piedmont Interstate Fair in Spartanburg and earned scholarships and recognition for Polk County. Prize money amounted to over $1,200. Sarah Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Seth Davis of Mill Spring, received an all expense paid trip to Florida from placing first in the fitting and showing division. Robby Barber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barber, Columbus, placed first in the Jersey Junior fitting and showing division. Linney Barber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barber, was Jersey Junior Female Champion Winner. Polk County placed first in the Jersey County Group. Michael Kerr, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Kerr, was Senior Champion and Grand Champion in the Guernsey division. Polk County placed first in the Guernsey County Group. In the Holstein division, Robby Barber placed first in the Jr. Fitting and Showing and was also Grand Champion in this division Polk County placed first in the Holstein County Group showing. Lori Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Walker participated in the beef show at the Piedmont Interstate Fair. Lori was over-all grand champion in the Cross-Breed category. Tryon High School junior qualified for the State Cross Country finals Friday at Charlotte. Carolyn was third out of 56 girl runners at Morganton Monday who braved the rain over Freedom High's 3.1 mile course. Sylva-Webster's Elsie Palmer captured the girls crown in 20:58, followed by Judy Hudson of East Burke (21:04); Carolyn Roff of Tryon (21:05) and Reynolds' Pat Miller (21:12). All the above individual leaders qualified for the state meet. Honored Past President Odell Matthews of the Tryon Kiwanis Club presented Robert F. Scruggs of Dogwood Trail The Kiwanis International Distinguished Service Award for his work with youth. The award was made at the regular meeting on Oct. 13th. Girl Netters At Sectional Today The Tryon High School girl tennis team is participating in the State Sectionals at Shelby today. Playing singles will be Sherrie Miller and Emily Sherer. Children under six years free if they make it through the Haunted House. The Haunted House starts at 7:30 each night. All proceeds go to local charity and civic projects. Dedication Service For Bill Hodge There will be a Dedication Service at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Sunday, Nov. 1 al 3 p.m. The service will honor the late Rev. Bill Hodge. The program will include dedication of the new addition to the church which began under his ministry. The steeple was given in his honor and will receive special emphaSis. The family will present to the church a portrait of the Rev Mr. Hodge Smith-Cedervall Barbara Lee Smith and Anton Cedervall were married Wednesday, October 21st by Father James Reynolds at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Charles M. Lee of Meadowlark Drive. Tryon They are making their home at Laurel Park in the Hunting Country.
