The OPEC oil cartel fixed a
new unified base price of $34 a
barrel! Thursday. Analysts said
the deal would add about 2tj
cents a gallon to the price
Americans pay for gasoline and
home heating fuel.
Tomorrow residents of
Columbus. Landrum, Saluda and
Tryon go to the polls to elect a
mayor and two councilmen.
Saluda and Tryon have no
contests. Columbus has three
seeking two spots on the council.
Landrum has two running for
mayor and 7 running for the two
council seats. We are fortunate to
live in a country where we have
the opportunity to offer for office
and also the opportunity to vote
for our choice. Evidently where
there is no opposition, most
people were pleased with the way
the present officials were
conducting the town’s business.
Local officials try to make our
communities a better place to
live and work. Sometimes we
disagree with them and fuss
about various things. Rarely do
we ever say that you are doing a
good job. This will be an
opportunity to go to the polls and

Winners Named
The Punt, Pass & Kick
competition was held Oct. 24th at
Harmon Field. The event was
sponsored by the Polk County
Jaycees. The first, second and
third place winners received
trophies.

Wrecks Truck
Horace McEntyre of Tryon
wrecked his pick-up truck
Thursday at 5:14 p.m. on Hwy
176 near Buffie’s in Tryon. The
truck hit the bank ar.d flipped
over, but Mr. McEntyre was not
injured.
Tag Office Closed
The Tag Office in Columbus
will be closed Tuesday, Nov 3rd
for the Columbus Town Election
County Nominee
For Morehead Award
Tim Ross
Tim Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs
William Ross, of Landrum, has
been named the Polk County
nominee for the Morehead
Award at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He
will now advance to the District
Competition to be held later in
Asheville.
Tim is editor of the school
yearbook this year and last year
was editor of the school
newspaper. He participated in
the Student Council his
sophomore and junior year and
has been a member of the Beta
Club, Key Club and Mongram
Club. He attended Governors
School last summer and is a
member of Society of
Distinguished High School
Students. He was a nominee for
the N. C. School of Science and
Mathematics. He has won the

Election
Tomorrow
The municipal elections in
Columbus. Landrum, Saluda and
Tryon will be held tomorrow.
In Columbus Ted Owens is
unopposed for mayor. In the
Council race (vote for two) there
are incumbents Harry Denton
and Mary Hicks along with Pat
Wilson.
Landrum is the town with lots
of Candidates. For Mayor there is
incument Dever Little and
former Mayor Robert Cogdell. In
the council race (two to be
elected) there are Raj’ Mayfield,
incumbent; Gerald Barnette,
Mike CarruUi, Bill Hill, Edmund
Komant, Alfard Mullins and
Robert Turner.
There is no opposition in Saluda
as Cater Leland is seeking re-
election as mayor and for the
council in which two are to be
elected there are incumbent
Homer Taylor and Genelle Pace.
In Tryon there is no opposition.
Ken Tucker is seeking re-election
as mayor and for the two council
seats there are incumbent Melvin
Phillips and Ellis Fincher.
Tryon Day Is
April 10th
Tryon Day, which proved so
successful last April, will be held
April 10th, in 1982. Co-chairmen
of the event are Earl Thompson
and Jim Lowry. This is one of the
activities sponsored by the Tryon
Chamber of Commerce and the
Tryon Central Business District
Committee.
