By rejecting a proposal by his budget director and a key Senate Republican to raise up to $80 billion in new taxes over the next three years, President Reagan has abandoned his effort to balance the budget by 1984. Tonight the Polk County football championship takes place at Harmon Field when Polk Central and Tryon tangle. Both teams have poor records, but it will still be a great game. The Tryon Council will meet (Continued On Back Page) Church Celebrates 90th Anniversary The Congregational Church of Christ of Tryon will celebrate its 90th Anniversary on Sunday, November 8, 1981. The events of the day will include a sermon at the 11:00 a m. worship service by Dr. Reuben A. Sheares, II, Executive Director of the Office of Church Life and Leadership of the United Church of Christ. Assisting in the service will be the Rev Charles Brewster and Dr. Arthur Brown. In the afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Mendelssohn’s oratorio "Elijah” will be presented by the choir, followed by a reception, providing a gloriuos climax to this day of celebration. It’s Dr. Waldrop Tony Waldrop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Waldrop of Columbus, received his P.H D in Physiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. His training was under Dr. Frederic L. Eldridge. His dissertation was titled ‘‘Prolonged Inhibition of Respiration Following Stimulation of Afferents From Muscles." Defrost regularly Football Tonight Tonight the Landrum Cardinals have their homecoming against Edneyville and Polk Central travels to Tryon for the championship of Polk County. Edneyville at Landrum The Edneyville Yellowjackets invade Landrum tonight. Landrum is 6-3, but lost 21-6 Friday night to Dixie. Both Edneyville and Landrum are the runner-up teams in their conference and will participate in the state playoffs. It should be a close, but Edneyville seems to be improving more than Landrum. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. Polk Central at Tryon Neither team has much of a record, but it should still be a great game. Tryon is 1-8 and Polk Central is 0-9. Neither team has displayed an offense, but when they play each other records don't count. Polk Central in a close one. Perfect Attendance Sunday, November 1, Green Creek First Baptist Church awarded the following people with Sunday School perfect attendance pins. Miss Fannie Roddy 15 year pin; Chuckie Brown, 12 year pin; Reggie Brown, 12 year pin; Homer Brady, 10 year pin; Dale Edwards, 9 year pin. The following received a 4 year pin: Hugh Hodge, Major Blackwell, Rachel Blackwell and Margaret Collins. School Vandalism Vandalism and larceny has become a problem at schools in District 1 and the board of trustees on Tuesday night discussed the possibility of installing alarm systems at the schools. More than $28,000 worth of equipment has been stolen over the past two years. Slightly less than half has been recovered Superintendent H. E. Hipp said the cost of installing the alarms could range from $1,200 to $2,000 per school. No action was taken on the matter. The board unanimously approved the dedication of the Chapman High School football stadium in honor of former coach Henry Smith. — Spartanburg Herald
