Tuesday he is postponing until
January his plans for new tax
increases and further cuts in
benefit programs and is
determined to reject any
spending bill that “abuses the
limited resources of the
taxpayers.”
The astronauts Joe Engle and

blast off in the Columbia space
craft today at7:30 a.m.
U. S. Rep. Bill Hendon said
recently he is co-sponsoring
legislation that would prohibit
sitting members of Congress
from voting themselves a pay
raise. ,
The Tryon Boosters Club meets
tonight at 7:30 at the high school

Charles Lankford
Appointed Honorary
Town Clerk
At the Tryon Town Council
meeting Monday night, Charles
Lankford was appointed as
Honorary Town Clerk for the
December 14th organizational
town meeting. For the past 28
years Mr. Lankford has served
on the council as mayor, mayor
pro tern and commissioner. He
did not offer for re-election this
year.
The Board approved the
leasing of office space in the town
hall to the Thermal Belt Cable
Television Co. at $60 per month.
The Board turned down an
offer to purchase town property
next to Skee’s Exxon Station on S.
Trade St. from Vince Tinney.
The Board adjourned to
executive session to discuss land
acquisition.

Gospel Singing
Bluegrass & Clogging
An evening of gospel singing,
bluegrass music, and clogging
will be sponsored by the public by
0. P. Earle Elementary School
and the Landrum Friends of the
Arts as part of their continuing
Evening Arts Series.
The program will be held
Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30
p m. in the Landrum High school
Gym. Featured for the evening
will be the Green Creek Mass
Choir, the Little Mountain String
Band, and the Green Creek
Cloggers.

Black Hospital in Spartanburg, S.

AARP Meets
Tuesday, Nov. 17th
The annual meeting of Polk
County Chapter No. 2182
(NRTA/AARP) will be held on
Tuesday, Nov. 18th at 10 a.m. at
the Tryon Presbyterian Church,
Harmon Field Rd. Officers for
1982 will be elected at this
meeting.
Mrs. Doris Sanders, Director of
Nurses, St., Luke’s Hospital will
be the guest speaker.
Dues for 1982 will be accepted
at this meeting.
Refresments will be served
prior to the business meeting. All
members are requested to be
present, and guests are welcome.
A Suicide
The death of Alvin Curtis
Barnette, 39, who died Monday,
has been ruled an apparent
suicide, said Spartanburg
County Coroner Steve Lanford.
Barnette, of Blanton Street,
Columbus, N. C. was found
outside a residence on New Cut
Road, Inman, at about 3:20 p.m.
with a single gunshot wound in
the head.
Lanford said paraffin tests,
which shows a person had fired a
gun, were positive. The bullet will
be sent to the state crime lab for
further study, he added. —
