The Columbus Council Monday
night voted to name the newest
street, running from Ward to
Walker Street between Tryon
Federal Savings and the Polk
County Library, Owens Street, in
honor of Mayor Ted Owens. The
Council also hired Ronnie Pack
as Columbus' first full time water
plant supervisor-operator.

Man Shot
Delano Moss, Hooker Road,
Lynn, was shot in the shoulder
Wednesday night. It was reported
to the Polk County Sheriff's
Department at 11:45 p.m. by
Margaret Moss. He was taken to
St. Luke’s Hospital where he was
treated and released.
A spokesman for the Sheriff’s
Department said that Mr. Moss
would not tell who shot him and
that there are no suspects in the
case.

Telephone Rates
The Mid-Carolina Telephone
Company has filed an application
with the North Carolina Utilities
Commission for an increase in
monthly rates for residential and
business customers. The com
pany is seeking an increase of
$6.6 million in annual revenues
Rates for additional listings, non
published and listed numbers in
the directory and other
miscellaneous charges will be
adjusted, according to the
application.
Mid-Carolina Telephone serves
more than 68,000 customers in
North Carolina.

Football Tonight
Landrum at Whitmire
The Landrum Cardinals who
inished their regular season with
a 7-3 record and runner-up in the
Conference I will travel to
Whitmire tonight for the first
round playoff game. Whitmire
won its conference and defeated
Jonesville in the final game. II

according to reports Whitmire is
too big. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.

The 11 o’clock worship service

To Give Scholarships
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will
give two scholarships for a full a
academic year to Isothermal
Community College. It is
expected that one scholarship
will be granted to a student from
Tryon High School and one from
Polk Central High School.

Saluda Women
Learn Of Hospice
The Saluda Woman’s Club,
meeting with Elizabeth Greiner
for the Novermber meeting, had
as guest speaker Rev. Tracy
Lamar who spoke on “Hospice.’'
Hospice is now organized in the
greater Polk County area. Hos
pice helps terminally ill patients
and their families deal with death
and the suffering leading to
death. This is done in the loving
atmosphere of home and triends.
Grief counseling and consulting
services are also offered the
family.
The Woman’s Club will again
erect and decorate a large
community Christmas tree in
down town Saluda.

Amateur Radio
Club Meeting
The Polk County amateur radio
operators will meet Thursday,
Nov. 19th at 7:30 p.m. in the
NCNB Conference Room. A film
from the American Radio Relay
League entitled “The World of
Amateur Radio” will be shown.
All hams are invited along with
potential hams to see the film.
The Tryon H. S. advanced special
education class working on their
Novice Class License and above
are also invitfed to meet the local
amateurs.
