The trial of four former Jaycee officials, accused of misapplying club funds in the socalled “Jamscam" scandal, was postponed Monday when a former state club president pleaded no contest to the charges. In a plea-bargaining arrangement J Harold Herring of Mount Olive pleaded no contest to two counts of misapplying $16,000 in club funds As part of the arrangement, Herring agreed to talk with the State Bureau of Investigation and to testify in the case against the other former club officers. William Holden, one of the movies’ most popular leading men for more than 40 years was found dead Monday in his apartment, apparently from natural causes. A recent issue of the Baltimore Sun had an article about a Sia mese cat, Lou who plays the piano in order to be let out at night. The cat now owned by Lillian and George Tracey formerly belonged to Stratford and Keith McKenrick who moved here a short time ago. C. 28782 Senior Citizens Meet Monday The Polk County Senior Citizens will meet Monday at the Meeting Place in Tryon al 5:30 p m. A covered dish supper will be followed by the program. The speaker will be Bernard Drummond who with his wife, Rita, has traveled extensively in both Africa and South America All senior citizens and those interested in their activities are invited. Columbus Firemen Elect Officers The Columbus Fire Department has elected the following officers for 1982: Chief, Ed Lanning; Assistant Chief, Geoffrey Tennant; Secretary, Gene Green; Treasurer. Ted Perkins; Slush Fund, Frank Lanning The Fireman of the Year is Herman Bunch. Car Wrecks William A Oman of Fox Mountain Road had a one-car accident Monday about 6:30 p.m on Hwy. 108 near Polk Memorial Gardens. Mr. Oman was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was treated and released. Mr. Oman’s car was headed toward Columbus when it left the road. The automobile caught fire when it wrecked and was a total loss. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 18,1981 Heart President C. Allan Pruette C. Allan Pruette, Tryon realtor, is the newly elected President of the Polk County Heart Association. He succeeds Malcolm Wiltshire. Mr. Pruette, as official Heart Association spokesman in this area said “we hope to continue to show a reduction in deaths from diseases of the heart and blood vessels. We will emphasize prevention of heart disease through our programs of education in early warning signs, risk factors and need for a prudent diet." An active board member of the local Heart Association since 1966, Allan Pruette has often demonstrated his personal concerns for the well being of the citizens in Polk County. He has been a past chairman of the Polk Cancer Fund drive; has chaired the fund raising activities for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, (Continued On Back Page) 16 Pages Today Price 10c Per Copy Tryon Council Special Meeting The Board of Commissioners of the Town of Tryon will have a special meeting in Executive Session at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19th at Town Hall to discuss Land Acquisition. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Pruitt of Campobello, S. C. are parents of a son, Brentley James, born Nov. 15th at Spartanburg General Hospital. The paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James Pruitt of Campobello and the paternal great-grandmother is Mrs. Elvie Pruitt of Inman, S. C. The maternal grandfather is Herbert Case of Saluda and the great-grandmother is Mrs Rena Plumley of Tryon. Report From Columbus Firemen During the past year the Columbus Firemen had a total of 1684 working hours. They responded to 56 fire calls. There were 13 house or structure calls, 8 vehicles, 23 woods or grass, 7 chimney and 5 .miscellaneous fires. A spokesman for the firemen said that they had complete cooperation with the councilmen and mayor during the year.
