Tryon Daily Bulletin, Fri.. Nov. 20. 1 ne Cosmic Reporter By Tim Linder This week I have a gues, columnist. 18 year old Randy Jnn of Saluda. Randy is an avid space enthusiast and has done research into the European Space Agency. Here is Randy’s article: "ESA Comes of Age" By Randy Flynn The European Space Agency, or ESA. was formed on May 31. 1975. It is made up of two previous organizations, the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) and the European Space Vehicle Launcher Development Organization (ELDO). ESA conducts satellite development, launcher construction and space research. ESA is made up of eleven member states; Belgium, Denmark. France, Germany, Ireland, Italy. Netherlands. Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Austria. Canada and Norway are observer nations and participate in some programs. The agency has a total staff of 1425 people at its headquarters in Paris and various installations. Field installations are located in Noordwijk, Netherlands; Darmstadt, Germany and Frascati, Itlay. These installations are responsible for study, development and testing of satellites, satellite orbital operations and Earthnet activities respectively. Other facilities located at Carnarvon. Australia; Kourou, French Guiana; Malindi, Kenya; Redu, Belgium; Fucino, Italy; Michelstadt, Germany and Villagranca, Spain are responsible for satellite tracking and data aquisition. ESA also particiaptes in some 1981 joint programs with NASA. Spacelab for example is a reusable space laboratory designed and developed by ESA. Spacelab will be carried into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle sometime in 1983. Some other current activities that are being planned by ESA are: Hipparcos, a satellite to be used for astronomical measurements: Giotto, a space probe that will encounter Halley's Comet in late 1985; and two Earth observations satellites called Meteosat and Sirio-2. ESA's biggest and most important project at present is the new Ariane launcher. The Ariane rocket will enable Europe to have their own launch capabilities. Ariane will soon be fully operational after its fourth test flight The Ariane launcher is designed to place up to a 970 kg payload into geostationary orbit. Later modified versions of Ariane will be able to place 2000 gk to 2420 kg payloads into transfer orbits. The Ariane launch site is located at Kourou in French Guiana. This launch site benefits from a natural lift during an eastward launch. The Ariane can place in orbit from this site a payload 17% heavier than an equivilant launcher can from the Kennedy Space Center. In just over six years of formal existance, ESA has become a major power in space. WINE DISCOUNTS AVAIL ABLE. All wines at MR. A's DELI are discounted by the case.
