Budget director David A. Stockman wants to end federal subsidies for low-income housing construction by next fall as part of spending cuts that has left housing officials in shock. He is also proposing to phase out the government's chief urban aid programs. The U. S. Justice Department disapproved Tuesday a 13-year- old North Carolina state constitutional amendment, saying it had led to the dilution of black voting strength in legislative districts. Compete For Scholarships Two local students, Deborah L. Culbreath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Culbreath, of Mill Spring; and Beverly D. Dedman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Monte Dedman, Jr., of Blanton Street, Columbus, both seniors at Polk Central High School, recently participated in an Honors Program held at Converse College. Over 150 high school honor students were invited to participate in competition for the Justine V. R. Milliken scholarships of $3,000 each year for a total of $12,000 for four years at Converse. Requirements include nomination by the appropriate secondary school official and participation in the 1981 Honors Program held in November on the Converse campus. THURSDAY, DEC. 3,1981 Tim Corbett Wins Insurance Scholarship Melvin Timothy Corbett of Tryon, North Carolina, a mathematics major at the University of North Carolina has been awarded one of ten scholarships given annually by the Independent Insurance Agents of America. These scholarships, from the IIAA Educational Foundation are given annually and are based on academic achievement and outstanding qualifications. Robert R. Treweek, CPCU, President of the Independent Insurance Agents of America said, “The challenges of the insurance industry today will require fresh and innovative thinking and if we can furnish our support to these young students, we will all share in the rewards.” Mr. Corbitt is currently pursuing a career as an actuary and is presently working as an actuarial intern while attending the University of North Carolina. He was recently initiated in Phi Beta Kappa and has already passed the first examination given by the Society of Actuaries. The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, an affiliate organization of the Independent Insurance Agents of America and the independent insurance agents in the Tryon area are all very proud of Mr. Corbett’s accomplishments and wish for him the very best in his future endeavors. Price 10c Per Copy “Band Of Gold” Reunion Dec. 13 The Inman Bands Boosters Club is sponsoring a band reunion of the Chapman High School band members from the year 1941. This will include all members of the Chapman Band of Gold when the band included Landrum high school band. Everyone who participated in the band program is invited to attend this reunion on December 13th at Chapman High School’s new gymnasium from 3 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served and there is no admisson. If anyone knows of a person who was in the band, majorettes, rifles, flags, drum majors, color guards, etc. who may not hear of this reunion please call 472-8738, 472-6874, or 472-9427.
