A surprise blizzard hit New
England over the weekend,
leaving up to a foot of snow in
many areas.

Marcus Allen, the Southern
California running back was
named the Heisman Trophy
winner Saturday night.
An airplane taking skydivers to
a football game jump Saturday in
Hawaii sputtered and spun into
Pearl Harbor near the USS
Arizona Memorial. Eleven of the
12 people believed aboard were
killed.
Monday was the 40th
anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
Many of us remember what we
were doing at the time and how it
changed our lives.
At the 1981 WNC Community
Development Program Saturday,
Pea Ridge Community was 4th in
division “B” (100-200 families)
and Saluda was fourth in division
“C” (more than 200 families).

Tryon Teams Win
Landrum Tip-Off
Tournament
The Tryon girls and boys won
the Landrum Tip-Off Basketball
Tournament Saturday night at
the Landrum gym with wins over
Polk Central. The Tryon girls
won 55-44 and the boys took a 47-
27 win. The Tryon girls reached
the finals with a 39-23 win over
Chesnee and the Tryon boys beat
Chesnee 62-49. Polk Central girls
beat Landrum 48-29 and the Polk
Central boys beat Landrum 60-56
to gain the finals.
Tryon girls and boys are now
3-0; Polk Central girls are 4-1 and
the Polk Central boys are 1-4.
Landrum girls are 0-3 and the
boys are 1-2.
In the girls championship game
Tryon jumped out to a 20-4 lead at
the end of the first quarter and
were never headed. Brenda Keys
was the leading scorer with 20
points, while Denise Booker had
14 and Camille Ratliff had 13
points and blocked a number of
shots. Donna Carson had 10
points for Polk Central.
Tommy Hill led the scoring for
the Tryon boys with 17 points
followed by Tony Cunningham
with 13 and Clement Booker with
12 points. Patrick Hines had 10
points for Polk Central.

Hunt Names Lowry
To NC 2000
Commission
The newly established
Commission on the Future of
North Carolina held its first
major working session on
December? in Raleigh. Governor
Jim Hunt has appointed Jimmy
R. Lowry of Tryon to serve on
that commission, which is
chaired by UNC President
William C. Friday.
The commission was
established by Hunt to prepare
for the growth and change
expected in North Carolina
between now and the year 2000.
The Commission is composed
of state leaders in education,
business, law, medicine, the
environment and other fields;
members of the N. C. General
Assembly; and members of the
State Goals and Policy Board.
Elizabeth Koontz, assistant
superintendent for teacher
education with the Department of
Public Instruction, serves as vice
chairman of the commission.
Lowry is president of Lowry
Chevrolet, Inc. He is a founding
chairman of Metrolina Native
American Association in
Charlotte, chairman of the N. C.
State Commission on Indian
Affairs and a member of the
Tryon Chamber of Commerce.

North Carolina and its citizens

Wreck
A one-car accident took place
Sunday at 12:30 a.m. at the
junction of Carolina Road and
Hwy. 176. A 1977 Chevrolet Vega
operated by Dawna Lynch
Horton of Rt. 1, Landrum went off
the highway and into the ravine.
Mrs. Horton and her husband,
Barry, were taken to St. Luke’s
Hospital where they were treated
and released. About $2,000
damage was done to the car.
The accident was investigated
by Tryon Police officers Bill
Steppe and Raphael Foy.
A New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morse of
Tryon are parents of a daughter,
Wendy Renee, born Friday, Dec.
4th at Mary Black Hospital. She
has a sister, Lisa and brothers,
Brian and Jody.
The maternal grandmother is
Mrs. Fred Porter of Tryon.
The paternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morse of
Saluda.
Fire
The Columbus Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a fire
Sunday at 12:30 a.m. on the Jack
Story Hill near Hwy. 108 and old
No. 19. The unoccupied large
frame house was destroyed.
Raleigh Parker has returned to
Hammond, Ind. after spending
Thanksgiving with his mother,
Mrs. Eunice Parker in Tryon.
