Woods Fire
The Columbus Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a
woods fire on Old No. 19 near
Lynn. A tree went across a power
line and started the fire. About 4
an acre was burned.
Weather Thursday: high 35,
low 23, humidity 35%. Friday
morning was sunny and cold.
Snow and icy roads Thursday
morning closed five county
school systems in Western North
Carolina and portions of the Blue
Ridge Parkway. Schools were
closed in Avery, Watauga,
Mitchell, Madison and Haywood
counties.
President Reagan asked
Americans working in Libya to
come home Thursday to keep
them from becoming pawns in
any showdown with the radical
Arab state. The government said
1,500 U. S. citizens — many of
them oil technicians — stand in
"imminent danger.”
The Greater Ivy Community of

Car Stolen
A 1974 blue Chevrolet Corvette
was reported stolen Thursday
night at 8:01 from the Tryon
Plaza parking lol. The car which
was valued al $7,000 was owned
by Wade Slatter, Rl. 2, Landrum.
Fire
The Columbus Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a
woods fire at the Elite Trailer
Park on Houston Road Thursday
at 7:30 p.m About 14 an acre
burned. The fire was caused by a
tree going across a power line.

Lighted Tues.
The Columbus Lions Club has
announced that the large cross on
top of Tryon Peak will be lighted
on Tuesday, December 15th at
7:30 p.m. As in the past the cross
will continue to be lighted
throughout the Holiday Season.
Those desiring to contribute to
the expense of maintaining the
cross and paying for the
electricity may send a
contribution to the Columbus
