Wreck
A 2-vehicle accident took place
on S Trade Street Monday about
12:22 p.m Both cars were headed
north A '78 Volkswagen operated
by Guenter Panoscha of Tryon,
stopped at the Hearthstone
entrance to made a left hand
turn A 1965 Ford truck driven by
V I. Newman of Lynn, failed to
stop in time and plowed in the
rear of the Volkswagen No one
was injured, but the Volkswagen
was totaled and about $800
damage was done to the truck.
Mr Newman was charged with
exceeding safe speed Tryon
Police Officer Leon Foy
investigated the accident.
Hit By Train
Ms, Gail Justice of Landrum,
driving a '78 Ford was struck by
a train about 3:50 a m Tuesday
Ms Justice was taken to St.
Luke's Hospital by the Landrum
Rescue Squad A spokesman for
St. Luke's Hospital said that Ms.
Justice was in stable condition in
the recovery room following
surgery Tuesday morning. She
received internal injuries and
superficial facial injuries.
The '78 Ford was demolished.

Retires
Charles W. Lankford
Charles W Lankford retired
from the Board of
Commissioners of the Town of
Tryon. Monday night. December
14, at the regular and
organizational Town Board
meeting. Mr Lankford did not
seek re-election in the town
Municipal Election this past
November. His last official act as
Mayor Pro Tern and honorary
Town Clerk was to administer the
Oath of Office for the Mayor and
Commissioners for the new
terms.
Mr. Lankford was first elected
10 the Town Board of
Commissioners on May 5, 1953.
Since that first term he was re-
elected seven times for a total of
28 years on the Town Board of
Commissioners. Going back to C.
D. Stevens in 1953, he served with
the following Mayors: R. E.
Brantley, William J. Hipps,

Fires
The Columbus Volunteer Fire
Department was called to two
fires Monday At 8 a m they were
called to a gas tanker on fire on I-
26 about half-way up the
mountain. The truck was
carrying 8850 gallons of high test
gasoline and going up the
mountain. The truck's brakes
had not released and caught on
fire. The truck driver told
firemen he saw the smoke from
his side mirror. The fire was
contained to the brake lining,
drums, etc.
The firemen were called out
about 7 p.m. to an old house that
was being burned below
Jackson’s Crossroads on Peniel
Rd. The house was being burned
on purpose, but a motorist
passing by, turned in the alarm.

For N. C. Capital
Claude and Elaine Graves of
Little Mountain Pottery. Peniel
Road. Columbus, recently
completed a commission for the
N. C. State Capitol Building in
Raleigh. Jill Flink Fine Art, the
Graves representative in
Raleigh, handled the commission
of trays glazed in the “Polk Oak"
design inspired by the Fall leaves
in Polk County
Miss Sandy Pruette, student at
Appalachian State University is
spending the Christmas holidays
