Thursday morning was more of the same, but the weatherman promised us some rain, snow or sleet. Mass arrests of defiant strikers were reported Wednesday in Poland. The second big storm in three days hit the cities of Northeast with foot-deep snow Wednesday. J. P. Stevens and Co., South Carolina's largest textile manufacturer, will lay off about 220 workers at plants in Greenville and Rock Hill within a month, according to a company spokesman. The cutback in the sales of the nation’s automakers forced Stevens to cut production at the Parker Plant in Greenville, which specializes in automobile carpeting. Maryland football coach Jerry Claiborne is hired as head coach at the University of Kentucky and George Welsh, head football coach at the U. S. Naval Academy is hired at the University of Virginia. C. 28782 A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Jack E. Hutcherson, Jr. of Chapel Hill are parents of a son, John Ryan, born December 9th at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He weighed 8 lbs. 84 ozs. The maternal grandparents arc Mr and Mrs. Calvin Freeman of Hillsborough and the paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jack E. Hutcherson, also of Hillsborough. Town Council Meets Monday The Tryon Town Council will hold a special meeting Monday Dec. 21st at 5:30 p m. at the Town Hall. The Council will consider water adjustments, a resolution from Southern Railway on Depot Property and the intersection at Hwy. 108 and Hwy. 176. Take Courses Pam Kelly and Linda Cochran of Design South Interiors, Landrum, recently attended two courses on selling and interior decoration conducted by Armstrong World Industries in Fort Mill. The courses are offered to employees of stores participating in the Armstrong Floor Fashion Center program whose purpose is to assist retail establishments in serving consumers. Ray Ledford is the pastor and Mrs. Clarence Rhodes is the choir director. Truck Breaks Window Here A freak accident broke a plate glass window in the Fast Fare store here last Wednesday night. According to police reports, the truck, owned by Sam Littlejohn was parked and Mr. Littlejohn was in the store. A girl in the vehicle was cold and wanted to start the truck.
