Unconfirmed reports state that
a state of civil war is taking place
in Poland as Polish security
forces battled ax-wielding coal
miners in southern Poland and
street demonstrators on the
northern coast, killing seven
people and wounding 200. The
Roman Catholic Church
intensified its campaign against
the military regime and
demanded freedom for Lech
Walesa, who was reported
refusing to cooperate with the
authorities.

Tryon Swim Club
Elects Officers
At a meeting of the Board of
Directors of the Tryon Swim
Club, Inc., held on December
14th, the following were elected to
serve as officers for the coming
year: Taylor Suthff. President;
Mrs. Charles Abbe, Vice
President; Henry Moffitt,
Treasurer; Mrs. Richard Bain,
Secretary.
Holiday Schedule
For Town Hall
Tryon Town Hall will be closed
Thursday, Dec. 24th and Friday,
Dec. 25th for Christmas holidays.
There will be garbage collection
on Thursday. There will be NO
garbage collection on Friday or
Saturday. Garbage collection will
resume regular schedule on
Monday.

Raise Money
For Easter Seals
Students at Polk Central School
recently participated in the
Burger King Basketball Shoot-
Out for Easter Seals The
students raised $168.81. The event
was coordinated by Betsy
Lindsay. Physical Education
teacher for the school.
Eight students in the seventh
and eighth grades participated in
the event. Students obtained
sponsors who pledged a certain
amount to Easter Seals for every
basket the student could shoot in
a three minute time period.
Trophies were presented to the
students who raised the most
contributions for Easter Seals
Winners were: Donald
Blackwell, first place with $42
and Lisa Wilson, second place
with $39.80.
To-shirts which were specially
designed for this event were
presented to four students who
raised $25 or more for Easter
Seals. These students were:
Donald Blackwell, Lisa Wilson,
Laura Ravan, andTy Cantrell.
Ribbons were awarded to the
top male and female shooting the
most baskets. These students
were: Donald Blackwell with 64
baskets and Donna Smith with 64
baskets.
Funds raised through this
project will be used to provide
Easter Seal services to the
physically handicapped in
Western North Carolina.

Clemson University had 605
graduates at mid-year
commencement on Dec. 17th.

ASCS Convention
The Polk ASCS County
Convention will be held today at 9
a.m. in the conference room of
the Agricultural Building in
Columbus Newly elected
Community Committeemen will
elect a farmer to serve as County
Committeeman for a three year
term. They will also select a
chairman and vice-chairman
from the county committee
members. The public is invited.
