The recession held consumer
prices to just a half-percent gain
in November, virtually
guaranteeing that inflation for
1981 will be under 10% and the
lowest in at least three years.
Polish priests and military
authorities entered two coal mine
shafts in an effort to persuade
3,000 miners to end their week-
long seige in defiance of matial
law, Warsaw Radio reported
Tuesday.
A tax notice in Wednesday’s
paper reminded us that we have
until Jan. 4th to pay our 1981 Polk
County property tax. After that
date a 2% interest will be added
with an additional 11% being
added each month thereafter
until paid.

Wrecks
Highway Patrolman David
Satterfield investigated three
accidents Tuesday morning that
were the result of icy roads.
The first was at 7:30 a.m. on
Hwy. 108 at the Rutherford-Polk
County line when a Jenkins meat
truck hit ice and slid off the right
of the road and turned over.
Gregory Mark Gantt of Bostic
was the driver and was not
injured. The truck was going slow
and only about $500 damage was
done.
At 9:30 a.m. on Red Fox Road a
1978 Ford driven by Jeff
Hembree of Rt. 1, Tryon hit an
icy spot and went off the right
side of the road and turned over.
The car was totaled.
At 10:30 a.m. a 1963 Ford
driven by Barbara Edmonds
Searcy of Rt. 1, Tryon on
Henderson Rd., hit a slick spot,
went off the right of the road and
hit a tree. Mrs. Searcy and her
husband, Ralph Thomas Searcy,
a passenger, were taken to St.
Luke's Hospital.
Mrs. Joseph Mervin Thompson
of Tryon has as guests for the
Christmas holidays the following
members of her family: her
daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Charles E. Whitehead, II
(Lydia) and their daughrers,
Amada Post Whitehead and
Molly Thompson Whitehead of
Chevy Chas, Md.; he son,
Wallace Underwood Thompson of
St. Charles, Ill.; also Mrs. Sara
Moscoso of Teaneck, New
Jersey.
Called To Lynn
First Baptist Church

Lynn First Baptist Church,
Lynn, N. C., recently called a new
pastor. He is the Rev. John Alvah
Andrews, III. Mr. Andrews is
originally from Grand Rapids,
Michigan, but has made his home
in the South for most of his adult
life, having earned both B.A. and
B.D. degrees at Bob Jones
University in Greenville, S. C. He
and his wife, Betty, presently
make their home in the Upward
Community in Henderson
County.
Mr. Andrews pastored for nine
years in Rome, Georgia and for
six years in East Flat Rock. In
his last pastorate, he saw the
church increase its financial
involvement with missions 400%,
at the same time expanding its
local ministry and remodeling
its sanctuary inside and out.

Dr. Archie Ellis
At Tryon Church
Dr. R. Archie Ellis will preach
on Sunday, December 27 during
the 11 o'clock service of the Tryon
First Baptist Church. His topic
will be "Who Is This?” Music will
be sung by the adult and
children’s choirs. The public is
invited to attend.
At Stony Knoll
The community party for the
Stony Knoll Club will be held
Saturday afternoon at 5 p m. at
Stony Knoll Community Center.

holidays with their mother, Mrs.
George Heckler in Tryon. The
family lived here when the late
Mr. Heckler was with Clevite
Corp, in Columbus. Mrs. Heckler
is in the process of moving back
to Tryon.

speak to the Tryon Rotary Club
on Monday, December 28 at 12:30

will speak on the acquisition of
Lake Lanier by the City of Tryon
and the city's plans for
preserving and using the lake.
Mark Butler, son of Mr. and
Mrs Jack Butler of Rt. 1,
Landrum, is home for the
holidays from Berea College.
