Burger on Sunday urged
Congress to consider trimming
federal judges’ power to set aside
state court criminal convictions.
Burger cited as his reason for
requesting the curbs: "The
administration of justice in this
country is plagued and bogged
down with lack of reasonable
finality of judgments in criminal
cases.”
Songwriter Hoagy Carmichael
died Sunday of a heart ailment in
Rancho Mirage, Calif. Among the
songs he wrote were "Stardust,"
"Lazy River”, “Georgia on My
Mind.”
Local Tar Heeel football fans
watched the UNC-Arkansas
game in the Gator Bowl on TV
last night.
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will

Dr. and Mrs. George Freier of
St. Joseph, Michigan have bought
a lot in Morgan Chapel Village,
Columbus. The sale was by Town
and Country-Knoblock Realty.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Stirling
have returned to their home at
Lake Adger after spending
Christmas holidays in London,
England with their son, James
and family. The highlight of the
trip was attending the Christmas
Eve service at Westminster
Abbey.
Miss Grace White has returned
to Princeton, N. J. after spending
the Christmas holidays with her
mother, Mrs. Ben White.
“Employee of Year”
Donald R. Jackson
At the St. Luke's Hospital
Christmas Party December 21 at
the Hearthstone Inn, Donald R.
Jackson was presented the
coveted "Employee of the Year’
award.
Mr. Jackson, an Emergency
Medical Technician-Paramedic,
was employed by St. Luke's
October 1978 as an ambulance
driver. Through his own efforts
and training offered by St.
Luke's, he achieved one of the
highest scores in the state on the
Paramedic certification exam.
He has superior knowledge in al)
phases of job and claims the
respect of the Medical staff and
nursing staff as well as peers
As described by his supervisor,
Mrs. Linda Lott, Mr. Jackson is
the "ideal" employee.
He is a graduate of Polk
Central, a member of the Polk
County Rescue Squad, and North
Carolina EMT Evaluator. He is
the son of Mr and Mrs. James
Jackson of Columbus.

During the month of November
the local 1% Sales and Use Tax
collected and returned to Polk
County was $25,877.56.
Wins Doll House
Mrs. Frank Petty (Elizabeth)
won the Doll House given away at
the Peppermint Gift Shoppe on
Dec. 22nd. The Doll House and its
furnishings were constructed and
designed by Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Palmer.

Members of the Polk County
Sheriffs Dept. went out
Christmas Eve and collected
approximately $200 plus toys for
needy families. Among persons
that were asked to donate ALL
galdly gave not only money but
their concern as well as their love
through the holiday season
