C. labor leader Wilbur Hobby was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months active imprisonment, five years probation and fined $40,000 for his conviction on fraud and conspiracy charges involving federal job-training jobs. Attorneys for Hobby immediately filed notice of appeal. President Reagan wants Congress to authorize a charge for care given to poor people under Medicaid and to cut more from the federal subsidy for school lunches. C. 28782 THURSDAY, DEC. 31,1981 Price 10c Per Copy Announces For Polk County Sheriff Ray Jones Ray Jones, 38, of Warrior Mountain Road, Tryon, became the first candidate to officially toss his hat into the race for Sheriff of Polk County this week as a Democrat. Jones, a native of Polk County who is presently employed by Columbus Amoco, is a former Polk County Deputy Sheriff, having served under former Sheriff H. M. Shelton. Jones, a Baptist, attended Tryon City Schools and is married to Kathy Price Jones. They have a daughter, Cricket, 9. The Landrum Library will close tonight at 6 pm. and remain closed Friday and Saturday. Taken from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Neal were a 1982 Cadillac, a 1982 Toyota Pick up (4 wheel drive). 16 guns, sterling silver, jewelry, pocket knife collection, tools, cameras, etc. Deputy Allen Rickman said the property taken was approximately $70,000. H stated that the larceny was th largest since he had been 1 member of the Sheriff’s Dept The investigation is continuing. Polk Republican Meeting Jan. 7th A Republican meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 7th at 7:30 p m at the courthouse in Columbus. Chairman Jim Rutledge said that offices that will be up for election will be discussed at this time. Covil-Fenner William (Bill) 0. Fenner and Denton Covil were united in marriage on Saturday, December 26th at the Columbus Baptist Church. The Rev. Fred Rhodes was the officiating minister. Mr. and Mrs Fenner will make their home in Winter Garden, Florida. Ramsey-Morrison Miss Christy L. Ramsey Mr. and Mrs. Jerry L. Ramsey of Columbus have announced the engagement of their daughter, Christy Lee, to Duane John Morrison of Charleston, South Carolina. He is the son of the late Wayne C. and Betty Morrison. Miss Ramsey, a graduate of Pine Forest High School in Fayetteville, N. C. and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is employed by Milliken and Company at the Midway Plant in Union, S. C. Mr Morrison, a graduate of St. Andrews Parrish High School in Charleston, S. C. and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, is employed by Milliken and Company, Gilliland Plant in Laurens, South Carolina. Their wedding is planned for February 14, at the Presbyterian Church in Columbus, N. C.
