Chowan College at Murfreesboro reports that Traci Marie McCurry and Tina E. Foster, both seniors at Tryon High School have been accepted for admission ' to Chowan College for the fall semester beginning Aug. 22nd. Chowan is a two-year, Co-educational, residential college. Over 62,000 veterans in North Carolina who kept their GI life insurance policies in force will share in a record $10.9 million dividend during 1982. Because of higher interest rates earned by insurance funds, the amount to be paid to policyholders during 1982 is about a million dollars above the 1981 figure. Umpire Clinic Wed., March 3rd. at 7 p.m. at the Tryon Town Hall. Appalachian Tournament The Appalachian 1-A girls tournament began Monday with NCSD (3-7) at Polk Central (4-6) and Rosman (0-10) at Tryon (6- 4). Edneyville (10-0) and Cherokee (7-3), which finished first and second in the tournament were awarded first round byes. The boys tournament begins tonight (Tues.) with Rosman (3- 7) at Polk Central (5-5) and NCSD (0-10) at Cherokee (7-3). Tryon and Edneyville finished in a tie for the conference championship with 8-2 records. Tryon earned the top seed in the tournament on comparative points spread. Both Tryon and the Yellowjackets earned byes in the first round. The girls and boys semifinals will be held at Cherokee with the championship games scheduled for Saturday at Cherokee. Fiddlers Convention At Landrum The 3rd annual Upper South Carolina State Fiddlers Convention will be held at the Landrum High School gym on March 13th from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m. The contest time will be from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. with awards being presented at 10:30. Contest catagories are: Fiddle (double string and old time): Acoustical Guitar (buffalo and straight string); Blue Grass Band (non-acoustic); Bull Base; Banjo (old time, hammer, 3 finger); Mandolin; Do-Bro; Dulcimer; Honky-Tonk Piano. C. 29322 Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to the McDowell home on Carson Street Sunday at 6 p.m. The heat from the chimney had caught the wood next to the chimney on fire. The firemen removed the wood and there was little damage to the house.
