It's beginning to look like
spring now as the January
Jasmine, jonquills, crocuses,

blooming. Lots of plants have
winter damage this year.
Interior Secretary James Watt,
in what appeared to be a major
policy reversal, said Sunday that
the Reagan administration wants
a moratorium on drilling and
mining in wilderness areas until
the end of the century.
The nation’s governors Sunday
rejected the administration's
appeal that they consider
President Reagan’s “new
federalism” program
independent of budget issues.
Named to the Appalachian All-
Tournament basketball team
were Robert Nelon, Jeff Sherer
and Tony Cunningham of the
Tryon boys; Brenda Keys, Emily
Sherer and Denise Booker of the
Tryon girls and Tawana
Rickman and Christa Pack of the
Polk Central girls.

Edneyville Girls,
Tryon Boys
Win Championship
The Edneyville girls and the
Tryon boys won the Appalachian
Conference Basketball
tournament Saturday night at
Cherokee. The Edneyville girls
beat Tryon 50-39 and the Tryon
boys downed Cherokee 66-61.
The Edneyville girls
maintained their mastery over
Tryon as Lomonda Gilbert led the
way with 17 points. Janice Conner
and Sherry Hill added 11 points
each. Conner, who was named
the Most Valuable Player in the
tournament also had 13
rebounds.
Brenda Keys had 15 points for
Tryon and Lawana Littlejohn had
10 more points.
Edneyville will host Polk
Central tonight (Tuesday) in the
first round of the District 4
tournament while Tryon will play
at Cherokee in first round action.
In the boys action, Robert
Nelon was the leading scorer for
Tryon with 22 points and he also
pulled down 10 rebounds. Jeff
Sherer had 13 points.
Tiny Taylor who was named
the Most Valuable Player in the
tournament had 25 points and
George Goings 15 points for
Cherokee.
Tryon had the lead from the
middle of the first quarter until
there were only 4 minutes left,
then Cherokee’s Tiny Taylor hit
two free throws to tie the score 52-

Tryon Educators
Return From
Colorado
A special training session was
conducted in Lakewood, Colorado
on February 11 and 12, for
visiting educators from Tryon
City Schools, Tryon. North
Carolina. Participants included
the Superintendent of Schools.
Vernon Dusenbury, as well as
Nancy Bollinger, Sally Jo Carter,
Franklin McKaig, Kenny
Spencer, Annette Stafford, ahd
Frances Wray.
This group is now prepared to
conduct staff development for
other Tryon educators as the
local school district prepares to
implement PROJECT STAMM
into the Tryon mathematics
classrooms during the spring and
fall of 1982; Tryon received
special funds for this training
session, materials and staff
development.
Tryon schools were selected to
receive an exemplary’ grant from
the North Carolina Department
of Education to adopt STAMM
(Systematic Teaching and
Measuring Mathematics)
STAMM is an objective
referenced mainstream program
currently used K-12 in al
Jefferson County Schools in
Colorado (where it wa ®
developed) as well as being
presently used in ° V " ,.,.
schools in 41 states. STAMM
features a careful management
system of helping stu en
acquire basic skills

Star Party

in Landrum and the Piedmont
Advocacy for Space are
sponsoring a star party on the
evening of Tuesday, March 2
beginning at 7:30 p.m. Telescopes
will be set up between Landrum
High School and 0. P. Earle
Elementary School. Stars,
planets the moon and other
celestial objects will be viewed.
There will also be a short slide
presentation and hot chocolate
