program and that he has no

Surgeon General C. Everett
Kopp said Monday that cigarette
smoking causes 30 percent of all
cancer deaths in the United
States and even non-smokers
should treat it as “a public health
potential hazard." Cigarette
smoking is a “major cause" of
cancer of the lung, larynx and
esophagus and "a contributory
factor” in bladder, kidney and
pancreatic cancer. The report
cited two studies which
concluded that non-smoking
wives of smoking husbands suf
fer an increased risk of lung
cancer.
Thursday from 9:30 a m. to 5

The Heart Fund Benefit Dinner
is Thursday at the Garrison

Pennington Shoe Shop on Hwy.
14 in Sandy Plains was broken
into Sunday night. Stolen were a
Kerosun heater, some ladies
pocketbooks, men's billfolds and
some shoe polish.
Polk County Sheriff Boyce
Carswell said about $50 in
merchandise was taken.
Break-In
The home of Mrs. Linda
Hartman on Rippy Hill was
entered sometime Monday.
Approximately $1,000 in jewelry
was taken. A TV was moved and
a microwave oven was
unplugged, but neither item was
taken. Sheriff Boyce Carswell
said that it appeared that the
thief or thieves were scared off
before they could leave with the
items.

Hendersonville bought an 82 acre
farm from the Bill Bryant Estate
on Smith Road in Green Creek.

Duke Endowment
Give $2,190
The Duke Endowment Charity
Care Grants distributed to
hospitals was $1,917,634. It was
given for charity care. Given to
St. Luke’s Hospital was $2,190.
“Feats” On Thurs.
“Feats” is a funny, fabulous,
frantic look at people who have
made a big imprint on the world
with their enormous “Feats."
This musical comedy highlights
the great steps man has taken in
the past, and points out goals we
can accomplish by putting our
best foot foward.
"Feats” is brought to you by
SET, the acclaimed Sheffield
Ensemble Theatre. SET, created
in 1972 by Rita and Buddy
Sheffield, was the 1978 recipient
of the Sara Spencer Award for
child Drama. They have
performed at Wolftrap, the
Kennedy Center in Washington,
and the National Showcase of the
Performing Arts for Young
People.
Presented jointly by the
Landrum Friends of the Arts and
0. P. Earle School, “Feats" will
be performed Thursday, Feb. 25,
at 7:30 p.m. in the 0. P. Earle
Gymnasium.

The 1982 March of Dimes
Mothers March sponsored by the
Thermal Belt BPW was held on
January 31st. Residents in
Landrum, Tryon, Columbus and
Mill Spring contributed $2,221.25

A New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bums of
Brewer, Maine are parents of a
daughter, Jennifer Megan, who
