Weather Tuesday: high 75, low

another spring-like day.
The Polk County Committee of
North Carolina 2000 met Monday
night at the Mill Spring School.
Carl Meroney and Glen Rhodes
are the chairmen of committee.
Its goals are to have citizens and
leaders make responsible
decisions. Glenn Rhodes gave a
review of the trends, forecasts
and history of the organization.
Other speakers were: Paul
Culberson, environment and
natural resources; Holland
Brady, Community
Development; Ken Tucker,
Economy; Mrs. Fred Rhodes,
People and Elderly; Dr. James
Benfield, Education; Opal Sauve.
County; Karen Rindge and
Beverly Stott on Youth. Those
present were given a booklet
on N. C 2000 and a questionaire
on "What do you want North
Carolina to be like in the year
2000?“
Layoffs, bad weather and
sluggish markets sent North
Carolina's jobless rate to 9.1% in
January, the highest since the
recession of 1975. In human
terms, the 9.1% rate meant
263,000 of the state’s 2.9 million

Dale McEntire’s
Paintings At
Fine Art Center
The Tryon Painters & Sculptors
Inc. are opening a new exhibit of
paintings by local artist Dale Lee
McEntire of Green Creek. His
one man show will be in the
Gallery of the Art Center for the
month of March.
Dale is a graduate of Polk
Central High School and an art
major of 214 years at Mercer
University in Macon, Ga. Due to
financial problems — a common
factor these days — Dale had to
continue his art education at
Gaston Community College plus
3'4 years of private study with
Karl Lohse in Tryon.
Besides his painting, Dale has
worked at carpentry, been Art
Director in the news dept, of a
Macon Ga. TV station and is
at present associated with J.C.
Penny Co. For the past 3 years he
has held the position of
Advertising Supervisor and
Visual Merchandiser with this
company.
In a Polk County Art Show at
Columbus, juried by the
Charlotte Mint Museum, one of
his paintings titled, "Miss
Martin" received honorable
mention, a proud achievement
for any artist.
Dale is a jogger, enjoys
backpacking and has a great
interest in the History of the
American Indian. His work
reflects all of these hobbies and
are a refreshing change of pace

Organizes Top
NOW Campaign
Dallas Hutcheson
First State Savings and Loan
Association, Spartanburg, S.C.,
received a national award for
excellence in marketing from the
Savings Institutions Marketing
Society of America (SIMSA).
First State Savings and Loan
received a second place award
among all savings institutions
with assets less than $150 million
for its marketing campaign
introducing NOW accounts. The
campaign, called Check Club,
was organized by Marketing
Director, Dallas Hutcheson, Vice
President of First State

woods fire at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Sayre on Warrior
Drive Monday afternoon.

Wins Event
On Sunday, Feb. 21 in Concord,
at the Sunday Sprints, Road
Races, Alan Peoples, of the Polk
County Striders, ran the mile.
Alan's time was 5.20 and he won
the event There were 70 runners
