Justice Dept. Thursday rejects S. C.'s reapportionment plans again for the 124 House districts. A worsening recession held inflation to a 3.5% annual rate in January, the lowest pace since the nation was in the thores of its last recession 18 months ago, according to government figures released Thursday. Jane and Paul Culberson of Columbus attended the Western North Carolina Tomorrow board of directors meeting Feb. 19th at Mars Hill College. Mrs. Culberson serves on the Education Committee and Mr. Culberson is Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources. N. C. 28782 A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Tony Elder of Columbus are parents of a son, Aaron Lee, born February 18th at the Rutherford County Hospital. The paternal grandnarents are Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Elder of Columbus and the maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wallace, also of Columbus. “Earthquakes” At Kiwanis Tuesday The Tryon Kiwanis Club will meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. The guest speaker will be Prof. Willard Parsons who will talk on “Plate Tectonics and the Origin of the Appalachians.” The speaker was Professor and Chairman of the Geology Department at Wayne State University in Detroit for 30 years before moving to Tryon where he presently teaches part-time at Polk County Campus of Isothermal Community College. His main interest in the later year of his professional life was a study of volcanoes and volcanic rocks in many parts of the world. ALANON Meeting The ALANON evening gorup will meet Monday (tonight) at 7 p.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Church. The ALANON afternoon group will meet Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Church. MONDAY, MARCH 1,1982 Tryon Girls And Boys In District Finals The Tryon girls and boys basketball teams are in the District Finals and both teams will play Edneyville. The girls game is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m and the boys game is at 8 p.m. The games will be played at West Henderson High School. During the regular season the Edneyville girls beat the Tryon girls twice and then beat them in the conference tournament. The two boys teams split regular season games and didn't meet in the conference tournament because Edneyville was upset by Cherokee in the semi-finals. All four teams will go to the Regionals which will be held in the Swain County gym at Bryson City The No. 1 teams from this conference (Appalachian) will play the No. 2 teams in the Smoky Mtn. Conference and the No. 2 teams from this conference will play the No. 1 teams from the Smoky Mtn. Conference. The girls will play Thurs , March 11th at Bryson City and the boys will play Friday, March 12th at Bryson City. The finals will be Saturday, March 13th. The winner will go to the State Finals. The Thermal Belt Business and Professional Women’s Club will sponsor a bus trip to the World s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 22, 1982. The cost per person will be $30.00 which includes transportation to and from the World’s Fair as well as a one-day admission ticket. Preliminary plans will be for one to three buses to leave Landrum, South Carolina at 7 a.m. arriving approximately 10 a.m. (opening time) and leaving at 10 p.m. (closing time) with arrival back in Landrum around 1 a.m. If you are interested in more information, call Karen Carruth at 457-2242 or Linda Marston at 457-3113. Reservations will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is hoped to run three buses which will accommodate 138 people. Reservations will be accepted up through April 15.
