The sun certainly looked good
Monday morning. The area was
surprised by the large snowfall
last Friday. The first reports
were that it would be an inch or
two turning to rain. A big change
from the high of 82 last
Wednesday.
Alfred Sheinwold in his bridge
column in the Charlotte Observer
on Feb. 28th told of Theodore
Lightner, who died three months
ago at the age of 88. He said that
Mr. Lightner was the link
between the earliest days of
contract bridge and the modern
game. He was Ely Culbertson’s
partner during part of the Lenz-
Culbertson match of 1931-32 and

Inducted Into
Second Wind
Richard Weiss
Richard Weiss was inducted
into the Second Wind Hall of
Fame March 1st at the Polk
County Chapter of the American
Red Cross fund drive kick-off
breakfast.
A plaque in recognition of his
contributions to this community
was presented by William
Martin, Advisor, Tryon Chapter
Second Wind Hall of Fame.
Mr. and Mrs. Weiss moved to
Tryon from Syracuse, New York
in 1976, and he has been active in
community affairs since that
date, including the Depot
inaugural, the Classic Film Club,
Tryon Rotary, Hospice, Boy
Scouts and Spolato in the
Piedmont. But his major
contributions have been in Red
Cross work.
He became chapter publicity
and promotion chairman in 1977

Fisher Honored
Duke Fisher, Boys Basketball
Coach at Woodmont High School,
Greenville, was named “Coach of
the Year,” in the Saluda Valley 3-
A Conference. Coach Fisher's
team had the best record since
1975. He achieved this honor with
only one player over 6 feet Coach
Fisher, played basketball at
Tryon High School, UNC at
Chapel Hill and Mars Hills
College. He coached the Tryon
boys teams prior to going to
Woodmont He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs James K. Fisher of
Tryon.
