C. 28782 No More Oxygen Orderlies St. Luke’s Department of Respiratory Therapy is a dramatic advance from the days of “oxygen orderlies” — staff members who toted oxygen tanks for patients in need. Wayne Link, Director of Respiratory Therapy, in a presentation to Trustees, graphically showed how St. Luke's Hospital, with equipment representing the highest state of the art, treats patients with the highest technical skill and according to the most advanced procedures. St. Luke’s five full time and two part time staff members administer life saving and comfort providing procedures from 7a.m. to9:30 p.m. daily. If a patient needs 24 hour coverage, the staff provides it. Ancillary procedures of this department include electroencephalograms ("brain waves ) taken on the patient in the hospital in 20 minutes, and telephoned simultaneously to a Center in Houston, Texas for reading. The department also provides patients with holler monitors, a miniature EKG machine which is worn on a belt at the waist, and a 24 hour diary, to inform the doctor of the heart's response to various patient activities. eadings from the monitors go to ayetteville, N.
