Oxygen Orderlies
St. Luke’s Department of
Respiratory Therapy is a
dramatic advance from the days
of “oxygen orderlies” — staff
members who toted oxygen tanks
for patients in need.
Wayne Link, Director of
Respiratory Therapy, in a
presentation to Trustees,
graphically showed how St.
Luke's Hospital, with equipment
representing the highest state of
the art, treats patients with the
highest technical skill and
according to the most advanced
procedures.
St. Luke’s five full time and two
part time staff members
administer life saving and
comfort providing procedures
from 7a.m. to9:30 p.m. daily.
If a patient needs 24 hour
coverage, the staff provides it.
Ancillary procedures of this
department include
electroencephalograms ("brain
waves ) taken on the patient in
the hospital in 20 minutes, and
telephoned simultaneously to a
Center in Houston, Texas for
reading.
The department also provides
patients with holler monitors, a
miniature EKG machine which is
worn on a belt at the waist, and a
24 hour diary, to inform the
doctor of the heart's response to
various patient activities.
eadings from the monitors go to
ayetteville, N. C. for speedy
analysis.
