Robert Scruggs, president of
the Tryon Chamber of Commerce
deserves lots of credit for a very
successful Tryon Day last
Saturday. The "Best Friend of
Charleston had 1583 passengers;
198 people went on the tours of the
Gillette Woods and Hunting
Country areas; over 200 people
attended the Puppet Show.
Others went to “Tryon Early On”
at the Fine Arts Center, took in
the Crafts and Arts exhibition
listened to the Tryon School Band
and to the Blue Grass Band and
watched the Polk County
Cloggers. There was more going
on than most of us could take in

House Burns
The Landrum Volunteer Fire
Department responded to a call
Monday at 7:45 a.m. at the home
of Clifford Parker off Landrum
Mills Road. The house was
destroyed by fire.
Chase Ends
In Polk County
The Landrum Police erased a
motorist over the back roads and
finally captured the suspect when
his vehicle wrecked in the
“Browntown” area at Pea Ridge
Arrested was Philip Edward
Burgess of Rt. 1, Columbus who
was charged by the Landrum
Police with Driving Under the
Influence and failing to stop for
Police Vehicle.
Landrum Police Chief Ayers
stated that the Landrum
Policeman tried to stop the
Burgess vehicle when it ran a
stop sign at Bomar Ave. and
Hwy. 14. The Landrum Police car
chased the vehicle out Prince
Road into Polk County and then
over back roads until the car
wrecked.
Man Shot
The Landrum Rescue Squad
took Junior Pruitt of Shamrock
Street, Landrum to St. Luke’s
Hospital Saturday about 11:30
p.m. Mr. Pruitt was shot in the
upper right shoulder and
according to Landrum Police
Officer Rick Blackwell the wound
was self inflicted. Mr. Pruitt was
in satisfactory condition at St.
Luke’s Hospital.

Spring Fling
More plans are materihzing for
the April 24 Spring Fling at Mill
Spring Elementary School. AU
day recreation is planned by me
Recreation Department. Events
to be held include a baseball
throw, horseshoes, a free throw
contest, sack races, three legged
races, football toss, a tobacco
spitting contest and frisbee golf.
Some of these might seem a bit
unusual but should be interesting
and fun for all ages.
A bit different format than
usual will be used to enhance
participation. Except for horse
shoe competition participants
may sign up and compete in all
events at any time during the
day. Best times and distances in
each event will then be
announced at day’s end.
Horseshoe competition will begin
at 1:30 with registration starting
at9a.m. 6
