winning the Western Sectionals
last Friday at A.C. Reynolds
High School. High school track is
competition between all size high
schools and they won over all
schools. Jo was a double
winner as she took the 100 meter
and the 200 meter daslis and
Carolyn won the 1600 meter run
and was 4th in the 800 meter run.
They will go to the Regionals
Thursday at Myers Park High

Two Arrested
The Polk County Sheriff
Deputies, Mack Blanton and
Mike Jones surprised two would
be burglars Sunday about 3:30
p.m. at the Columbus Gulf
Station at the Intersection of 1-26
and Hwy. 108. Arrested were
Keith H. Rose of Charlotte and a
juvenile, also of Charlotte. Rose
was charged with possession of
marijuana, attempted larceny,
possession of amphetimenes,
transporting open container of
alcohol, carrying a concealed
weapon (.38 revolver). Deputies
Blanton and Jones were alerted
by the Polk County Sheriff's
Dispatcher of a possible breaking
and entering in progress at the
Gulf Station and when they
arrived the thieves had the hose
in the car’s gas tank and were
getting ready to break into the
station to turn the power on.
Quick action of the Sheriff's Dept,
prevented the Columbus Gulf
Station from being broken into.
Upon examination of their
automobile a jar of money, candy
and other merchandise were
found which were taken from the
Gulf Station at Hwy. 14 and I-26 at
the Landrum exit. The South
Carolina authorities have
charged them with breaking
and entering, destruction of
personal property (plate glass
window).

John Lawrence
The Polk County Jaycee
Distinguished Service Award
went to John F. Lawrence last
Friday night at the Tryon School
Cafeteria. Mr. Lawrence is editor
of the News Leader in Landrum
and is a graduate of Landrum
High School and the College of
Journalism of the University of
South Carolina at Columbia. He is
a past president of the Landrum
Chamber of Commerce and the
Landrum Lions Club. He was
named “Lion of the Year” in
1981. He is married to the former
Constance D. Fortner of
Greenville and they have two
children, Chris and Elizabeth.

Win Sectional
Jo Miller of Polk Central and
Carolyn Roff of Tryon won the
Western Sectional Friday at
Reynolds High School. Jo won the
100 meter dash in 12.4 and the 200
Meter Dash in 25.9. Carolyn won
the 1600 meters in 5:30.7. The top
three qualifiers from each event
advanced to Charlotte’s Myers
Park High for the Regionals.
The team finishes were: 1st.

Saturday was a big day for the
Hooker and McCallister families.
Beth McCallister (Mrs. Rick), a
teacher at the Tryon High School,
received her Masters Degree in
French from Winthrop College at
Rock Hill, S.C. and her mother,
Genelle Hooker (Mrs. Bill) of St.
Luke’s Hospital, got her degree in
Business Administration from
Limestone College at Gaffney,
S.C.
