The cost of mailing a letter next
year likely will go from 25 cents
to 30 cents. The increase, the first
since 1988 will be before the
Postal Service Board of
Governors when it meets March
6th. Second and third class mail
costs will also go up.
Beginning in July 1991, all 646
schools in the Los Angeles
Unified School District will go on
a year-round schedule. Gone will
be the traditional three-month
vacation in the summer.
On Sat., Feb 17th junior high
school mathletes will juggle
logarithms, hurdle equations and
rebound logic problems during
the 7th annual MATHCOUNTS
competition to be held at
Reynolds Junior High beginning
at 9:30 a.m Students from 42
area schools will compete.

Skyuka Zoning
Hearing Tonight
The classic arguments for and
against zoning are likely to be
heard by the Polk County
Planning and Zoning Commission
once again tonight in a case
involving Skyuka Road.
And the commissioners are
likely to do more than just listen.
At their January meeting, the
members agreed they would try
to decide the matter after the
public hearing and end the long
process the zoning petitioners
have gone through.
Eighty-seven property owners
in the area just east of Columbus
have for the last nine months
been working to win single-
family residential, one-acre
minimum zoning for the 840-acre
tract where they live and own
property along Skyuka Road
The land is bounded on the
south by 1-26, on the east by
Houston Road and the Columbus
city limits, on the north by White
Oak Mountain, and on the west by
the Columbus Township line.
While the tract is within the
Columbus one-mile zoning area,
Columbus Town officials last
summers elinquished their right
to handle the zoning matter, but
reserved the option to annex the
area in the future, said Charles
Neff, Jr., one of the petitioners, in
an interview Wednesday.
The petitioners then
approached the county. The
county first had to be persuaded
to adopt a new zoning
classification, RE-1, limiting
development to single-family,
one acre.

Wilkins Nominated To
McDonald’s All
American
Basketball Team
Carolo Wilkins of the Polk
County Wolverines is being
honored as one of the best
atheletes in the country as a
candidate for the 1990
McDonald's All American High
School Basketball Team.
Wilkins is one of 1,500 prep
cagers in the nation nominated
by the McDonald’s All American
Basketball Team Selection
Committee. a prestigious
committee of high school basket-
ball coaches and sportswriters
The committee is headed by
Morgan Wootten, coach of
DeMatha High School in Hyatts
ville, Md., one of the top-ranked
high school teams in the country.
As a nominee, the 6-3 point/
guard is in the running to be one
of the 20 members selected to the
1990 McDonald’s All American
High School Basketball Team.
Wilkins leads the Polk County
team in offense with a 21.9-point
per game average. He is coached
by Derek Thomas
The McDonald’s All American
Basketball Team was formed in
1977 to recognize outstanding
young athletes. Wilkins will be
honored for his nomination in a
pregame presentation on
February 13 at the Polk Central
High School gym.

Deborah L. Seyffert has been
appointed Branch Manager of the
Tryon Office of First Federal
Savings Bank.
Seyffert received an Associates
Degree in Arts and Science from
Central Virginia Community
College in 1979 and attended
Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University from 1979 -
1981.
Prior to joining First Federal,
she served as Branch Manager
with Crestmont Federal Savings
and Loan in Morristown, New
Jersey and Monarch Federal
Savings Bank in Morris Plains,
New Jersey

offices in Western North Carolina
