The commissioners listened for the better part of an hour as area residents for and against zoning debated Residents of the Skyuka Road area just west of Columbus city limits to the Columbus Township line presented a petition requesting a residential, one-acre minimum zone be established on the 840 acres surrounding their homes But others, members of the Claudy Pack family which owns 52 acres in the proposed residential zone, and residents in neighboring areas west of 1-26 toward Lynn, objected to zoning on principles. One speaker even called those who favor zoning "communists.” "I feel like this needs more discussion, feelings like they are." said commissioner W E Barnette, after the meeting Commissioner Carl Wharton disagreed "Delaying this is of no particular benefit," Wharton said "We're just delaying making a decision. We're making all these people come back. February 12 at 10 a m in the school commons The program is a part of the Black History Month activities of the community A group of students have assisted in the planning of the assembly and will participate in the program to carry out the theme, “We Have A Dream." Costina Davis will introduce the program with a few remarks about the "Dreams of Man" and conclude the program with a poetry reading. Lenny Kirkendoll will read from the writings of Martin Luther King, Jr Tisha Hamilton will sing two songs for the occasion and comment on the influence of Black Musicians on music Kyle Cunningham will talk about the role of the Black Athletes in sports Anita Steen will comment on the contribution of Black Writers to literature and Carlos Wilkins and Kendra Douglas will present poetry readings Warren Carson is a graduate of Tryon High School and assumed a leadership role at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he received his Bachelor's Degree and at Atlanta Unviersity where he received his Master's Degree He is now completing doctoral Coiiliiiiieil On Back Page
