Nelson Mandela has been
released after 27 years in prison
in South Africa. . „
Due to overcrowding in North
Carolina prisons, many prisoners
are being released after serving a
few weeks. An increasing
number of people found guilty are
requesting active time instead of
accepting probationary
sentences that would pul them
under supervision for years. The
state constitution prevents a
judge from requiring a prisoner
to accept probation or parole.
