Thursday afternoon a high-
speed chase came through Polk
County William Byron Brooks,
35 of Lexington. N. C. was
apprehended in Rutherfordton
after a 25 minute chase that
started in Spartanburg County
and went through Polk into
Rutherford County. Brooks is
accused of robbing the South
Carolina National Bank at 930
Hearon Circle, Spartanburg
around 5 p m. Spartanburg
County Sheriff’s deputy Bi
Wharton chased the vehicle all
the way and had Polk and
Rutherford deputies and N.C.
wichway Patrol help. The
uspect lost control of the vehicle
which had a flat tire and ran off
the road in Rutherfordtom
Wharton chased the man and
tackled him across the street
^om the Rutherford County
Hospital Brooks received a
broken leg and was taken to
Spartanburg Regional Medical
Center for surgery. During the
chase the suspect tossed a pistol
out of the window and this was

SBA To Work
Through Local Board
The Board of Directors of the
Region C Development
Corporation has received a
Certificate of Approval from the
Small Business Administration to
operate as a certified
development company in
Cleveland, McDowell. Polk and
Rutherford counties. The
Certificate was presented Feb. 15
by Ms. Bynum Rudisill. District
Council of the Charlotte SBA
office.
This certification allows the
newly formed Corporation to
work with commercial banks in
offering financing for land,
buildings and equipment to
healthy small businesses in the
four counties. Staff services for
the Corporation are provided by
the Isothermal Planning and
Development Commission.
The Corporation membership
is appointed by the respective
county commissioners. The
current officers of the
corporation are: Ed Ghent,
McDowell County, President;
Bobby Smith, Cleveland County,
Vice President, Ms Celia
Arledge, Polk County.
Treasurer; Allen Jobe,
Rutherford County, Secretary;
Ms Judy Bohan, Rutherford
County. Assistant Secretary.

Skyuka Road Zoning
Approval
Recommended
The Polk County Board of
Commissioners today at 3 p m.
will get its chance to consider the
controversial zoning case
involving Skyuka Road.
The Polk County Planning and
Zoning Commission, which has
been considering the case for the
last nine months, decided in a
special session Thursday to
recommend approval of a new
residential, one-acre minimum
zone on 840 acres just west of
Columbus
The planning commission's
recommendation normally
carries a lot of weight with the
county board
Planning commissioner W E
Barnette made the motion to
recommend approval which was
passed unanimously by the six
members in attendance.
Commissioner Charlie Feagan
was absent.
"In view of all we've heard and
in view of the fact that its 88 to 1
in favor of this, I make the motion
that we ask the county
commissioners to designate a
new zone," Barnette said.
Barnette was referring to the 88
signatures of property owners in
the affected area on the petition
seeking the zoning Claudy Pack
was the one opposed At a public
hearing Feb 8, he said he wanted
to reserve all his rights, including
the right to sell his 52 acres to an
industry.

Landrum Lions
Meet Tuesday
The Landrum Lions Club will
meet Tuesday at 7 p.m at the
Landrum Civic Center The guest
speaker will be Charles Gray of
Inman, the Clemson Extension
Agent in Spartanburg County.

"Gardening and Horticulture "
Spring Is Coming!
The first signs of spring are
everywhere. The forsythias

the daffodills are springing up
And, in natural sequence, here in
the Tryon area, this means the
Spring Concert is coming
The Tryon Community Chorus
has announced the date of its
opening registratin and rehearsal
on Monday, March 5 at 7 p m at
the Congregational Church Hall.
We are happy to report that Betty
Brewer and George Finnie will
join their considerable talents
once more for this new and
welcome production
The Chorus hopes that all
singers, great and small, will try
out on March 5. They welcome
newcomers and look forward to
seeing all who have contributed
to the success of past
